On Feb.?3, 2001, Boeing’s X-32A flew its 66th sortie, completing the company’s concept demonstrator flight test program. Six military and contractor test pilots flew the aircraft for a total of 50 flight hours and met all government test objectives. Boeing showed the commonality of its design by demonstrating the aircraft carrier variant and conventional takeoff and landing handling qualities without any modifications to the aircraft.? The experimental aircraft lost the competition for the Joint Strike Fighter program to the X-35, which would become the F-35 Lightning II.
