On August 12th, 1977, Rockwell’s OV-101 Space Shuttle Enterprise was released from a specially-configured Boeing 747 Space Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) and made its first unpowered free flight to the Rogers Dry Lake bed. The Enterprise was a prototype, non-orbiting model of the spacecraft, built for Approach and Landing Tests (ALTs).? It had been pulled truck to Edwards from Plant 42 for the tests. Its crew consisted of Fred Haise and Gordon Fullerton. The ALT program would consist of eight captive and five free flights.
