Congratulations to Col. (sel) Seth Hernandez and Col. (sel) Kurt “Craft” Macaloney!
The Air Force has selected two of our own for promotion to Colonel. Congratulations to Col. (sel) Seth Hernandez (412 MXG Deputy Commander) and Col. (sel) Kurt “Craft” Macaloney (412 OG Deputy Commander) on this prestigious and very well-deserved recognition. Only 2% of commissioned officers ever achieve the rank of “Full Bird.”? This year, the Air Force selected just 543 out of the more than 9,300 Lt. Cols. in the Active Duty ranks for promotion to Colonel.

On August 10, 2006, the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center (now the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center) began flight tests on Quiet Spike, a project designed to study the possibility of suppressing sonic booms. The tests involved an F-15B fitted with a 24-foot-long retractable spike mounted on its nose. The spike, built of composite materials, was designed to change its length in flight. It would create three small shock waves traveling parallel to each other, all the way to the ground. The project would fly more than 50 flights to probe the effectiveness of the design. It was part of a research effort that continues into the present as NASA Armstrong prepares for testing the X-59 QUESST aircraft.
