On December 20, 1954, the redesigned Convair YF-102A Delta Dagger flew for the first time at Edwards Air Force Base. The original YF-102 had been designed to act as an interceptor to enemy bombers and fighters. Upon delivery in 1953, however, the aircraft failed to meet the expected performance requirements. In response, Convair redesigned the aircraft into the YF-102A. The new design incorporated a number of improvements, including a pinched waist (sometimes called the “Coke bottle” design), a narrower canopy, and a more powerful engine. The new version demonstrated enough improvement that the Air Force ordered the aircraft into production. The lessons from both designs laid the groundwork for Convair’s later F-106 Delta Dart interceptor.
