Muroc Army Air Base
On July 23, 1942, the Muroc Bombing and Gunnery Range became an independent installation and Major Glenn L. Arbogast became the first commander of the new base, officially titled “Air Base, Muroc Lake, California” (though most people just called it the Muroc Army Air Base).?The site was originally set up by Lt Col Henry “Hap” Arnold while he was the acting commander of March Field in Riverside.?Though the location’s value as a test site had already led the Army to establish the Materiel Center Flight Test Base (present-day North Base) at the northern end of the lakebed, the main base remained focused on its training mission through the end of World War II.
