Edushapers – A Canadian EdTech Startup with a Global Vision
Impact Startups are disrupting the startup ecosystem with their drive to improve lives. Entrepreneurs with a deep sense of this singular purpose are making a difference in the societies.?
In this edition, I am sharing story of an amazing education technology startup that aims to transform the education landscape by training teachers to deliver excellence in countries where governments have failed to provide quality education.?
In 2018, a newcomer to Canada with a technology background decided to revolutionize education by using tech in developing and underprivileged societies. In the initial stage, he wanted to bridge the communication gap between schools, students, teachers, and parents, by offering them the services and information they need via the cloud. Edushapers was driven by a vision to create a stronger, more connected learning community where access to education wasn't limited by socio-economic factors.
However, in 2020, COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to close and in the third world countries, continuing educational activities became almost impossible. Those were real challenging times for schools. Edushapers pivoted to support several schools in Pakistan where they were testing their product.?
Given the fact that Edushapers was bootstrapped, funding was eroding fast, since during pandemic, the focus was not on revenue generation, sustainability became challenging. They had do decide between pivoting and perseverance. Realizing the potential to create a far more significant impact by shifting focus from the schools to the teacher’s training in developing countries, they started consulting mentors. Idea was validated by organizing online sessions with teachers and experts.?
The new focus of empowering teachers with technology tools and training, and helping them improve their financial situation proved its worth. In 2022, Edushapers trained over 1000 teachers and in 2023, they have already tripled this number, with an aim to bring over 5,000 teachers in their network.?
These are fee based programs. Unique because no one is doing this in Pakistan. Interestingly, over 90% of the teachers we worked with were women. Working conditions for women in many of these countries leave a lot to be desired, this intervention had the additional benefit of improving their working circumstances and earning capacity.
One of the best outcome of the process is creating communities of teachers, at this point over 3,000 teachers are actively connected on a singular platform with Edushapers.?
