Empowering Students: The Crucial Role of Universities in Combatting Bullying, Harassment, and Discrimination

In 1905, India began boycotting foreign products. Known as the 'Swadeshi Movement', this protest saw participation from various sects of Indian society, prominently from students. ?

Despite being aware of the consequences they would be instigating, students of Calcutta's Eden College burnt an effigy of Viceroy Lord Curzon. Almost 10,000 students faced harsh chastisement for this act. ?

Students playing a pivotal role in the revolution is not a phenomenon restricted to India. Hitler's horrendous regime faced opposition from the White Rose (a peaceful resistance group formed by medical students). The Soweto Uprising of 1976 in South Africa saw 3000-10,000 students marching on streets against unequal education schemes for black South Africans. ?

If one observes the pattern of uprisings, questions about the causal trigger of student involvement are only natural. For instance, what brings the youth- individuals with neither capital nor position - to the forefront of change??

Universities. The answer is universities. ?

Besides being an institution for imparting knowledge, universities are sculptors of infrastructure for social change. The research and development generated within its walls enlighten the youth and entice them to explore the place between 'how things are' and 'how they ought to be'. ?

In the tussle between priori societal systems and the craving for something better, universities train the youth to become the bearers of social change.

Speaker Unveiling: Meet the Voices of the Panel

Kevin Lee , CEO, Yuvaa

Disrespectful. Disobedient. Spoilt!?

Society's "Youth" is often assumed to be a rebellious class that's utterly ungrateful for the privileges that their parents did not have at their age.??

But isn't the youth the litmus test for checking the efficiency of societal systems? Doesn't their rebellious phase turn them into adults who question the Government and keep democracy alive???

"From starting off as a platform that only shared what young people said at our open mics, we’ve now evolved into an organisation that talks about mental health, gender and identity, pop culture, sexual health, cyber safety, climate change among many other topics that young Indians are interested in......."?

Kevin Lee, CEO of Yuvaa, made this statement while speaking about the genesis of his award-winning youth platform.??

The Executive Producer of the podcast Dear Teenage Me believes that, despite their attempts to appear cool or rebellious, the young generation is actually lonely, confused, and desperate in search of a safe space to speak.??

Yuvaa, under his tenure as CEO, has collaborated with UNICEF, the Gates Foundation, Meta, Google, Spotify, and many more with campaigns about issues affecting the younger sect.??

Introducing Kevin Lee as one of our speakers at Anvay. He will be sharing his experience while shedding some light on the topic of “Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination: Young Adults & Role of Universities”.

Rachel DiBella, PsyD, LICSW , Associate Director, Strategic Prevention Initiatives Office for Gender Equity, Harvard University

"If the first person believed in what I said, I would have reported it."

Often discouraged by self-blame or the stain of humiliation, victims of sexual assault on college campuses do not come forward with their incidents. Even if some people do come forward, most universities and colleges have two responses: (i) victim-shame the person or (ii) assessment of the incident by an unsupervised, arbitrary proctorial board.

In either of the scenarios, universities/colleges miserably fail at providing vital support to the victim; serving them justice is just a far-fetched idea.

In a presentation titled "Healing the Whole Person", Rachel DiBella discussed sexual assault on campuses and methods to enable universities & colleges to create resources to deal effectively with such offences.

An Associate Director for Strategic Prevention Initiatives in the Harvard University Office for Gender Equity, Rachel is a gender equity champion and a national speaker.

Before coming on board at Harvard, she extensively worked with LGBTQIA+ health, gender justice, and violence prevention initiatives in higher education institutions, healthcare organizations, and the legal system.

Aniha Brar , Dean, Young India Fellowship and Vice Chancellor’s Office Ashoka University

What does it mean to be "socially conscious"?

According to an article by Charles H. Cooley, published in the American Journal of Sociology, "Social consciousness, or awareness of society, is inseparable from self-consciousness because we can hardly think of ourselves excepting with reference to a social group of some sort, nor of the group except with reference to ourselves."

In short, he concluded, "self and society are twin-born, and we know one as immediately as we know the other."

Young adulthood is the first stage when an individual begins questioning everything to form a sense of self and society; the phase when they don't just want answers to 'why' but also to 'why not'.

With the vision of nurturing socially conscious individuals who can forge new paths, Ashoka University launched the Young India Fellowship Programme (YIF).

"I believe this combination of enhanced awareness and sensitivity, coupled with the necessary skills and networks help them create an impact in the future.", said Aniha Brar, Dean of YIF and Vice Chancellor's Office at Ashoka University.

The winner of 'Exemplary Leadership in Academia' takes great pride in the work undertaken by YIF alumni at the grassroots levels of India.

Dr. Vinita Chandra, Associate Professor, Ramjas College, Delhi University

"...unless you spread awareness to prevent it, it won't be recognized as sexual harassment."

What is sexual harassment? Or rather, which activities fall in the category of sexual harassment? Does staring, unsolicited texting, or stalking be seen as such an offence??

These behaviours have become normalized to the point where people do not consider them offensive; even women fail to earmark such incidents as sexual harassment.?

Sexual harassment, especially on college and university campuses, occupies and brims inside crevices of power disbalance between the guide and the guided.?

Dr Vinita Chandra, an Associate Professor and one of the founders of the Gender Forum at Ramjas College, discussed this issue as she elucidated on University of Delhi’s ordinance on Prohibition of and Punishment for Sexual Harassment.

With two decades of experience in dealing with Gender and Sexual Harassment, Dr Chandra highly advocates the "Prevention is Better than Cure" policy. While speaking on the incident concerning a Vice Principal of Ramjas College, against whom students filed a complaint of sexual harassment, she advised all students,?"...the minute you feel something is making you feel uncomfortable, do not wait for it to happen the second or third time."

Introducing Dr Vinita Chandra as one of our speakers at Anvay.

Zeinab Farokhi, PhD , Assistant Professor (LTA), Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, University of Toronto, Mississauga Concordia University

What is the academic recipe for the concepts of discrimination and harassment??

Each academic discipline wanted to have a say and share their grandmother's recipe in response. History wished to contribute its traditional flavours, while the feminist theories wanted to add Tabasco of modernity to it. And how could the laureates (and even former sufferers) of the LGBT+ studies be kept away from this intellectual kitchen when kingmakers (political studies nobles) and elite liberal academicians were allowed in this cuisine discussion?

So, they reached a conclusion-sounding compromise.?

The best recipe would be the one with a little of everything from all”— an interdisciplinary answer that explained the roots of Discrimination and Harassment in the past and identified their signs in future.

With charisma and nonchalance?Women, Gender and Sexuality studies?delivered the golden recipe and swooped the winner's crown!

To share this recipe at Anvay, we have?Zeinab Farokhi— an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto Mississauga —with her proficiency and a PhD in Women and Gender Studies and Diaspora and Transnational Studies at the University of Toronto.

Introducing Zeinab Farokhi as one of our speakers at Anvay.

Dr. Asha Verma, Ph.D. (Law), M.Phil., LL.M., B.A. LL.B.(Hons.), UGC-NET, Assistant Professor of Law, Gujarat National Law University

The burning of the ancient Nalanda University is considered one of the horrendous losses of human race. It is even said that when the university was being ransacked and destroyed, the teachers present there ran to save the books and manuscripts by putting their lives at stake.?

Although this story does not have a recorded witness statement, it is readily accepted by all as true.?

Why? Because we know that a university is not made of bricks and stone; its building is made of these materials. But its?Tathya, or substance, is its educators—the professors who teach, train, and mould the next generation.?

Dr. Asha Verma, Assistant Professor of Law at Gujarat National Law University, is one such sculptor. An avid researcher with 7 years of experience, she has numerous research works credited to her name, including a Research Project on " A Study of Implementation of Maternity Benefit Act,1961 and its comparison with other schemes" sponsored by the National Commission of Women, New Delhi.

Besides being an Executive Committee Member of the Indian Adult Education Association, she is also an appointed Member of the Board of Studies in Human Resource Management for a tenure of 01-06-2022 to 31-05-2025 under the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) by CHAROTAR UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.

Introducing Dr Asha Verma as the panel moderator for “Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination: Young Adults & Role of Universities” at Anvay.

Signs of Bullying: I hear rumors, "She is historical," and she will not say anything to anyone. We run business in the department! She can leave if she does not like it here! It does not matter if you can show evidence; people in the administration will go silent because they do not want to lose their jobs. It can be difficult to identify instances of bullying, but there are certain warning signs to keep in mind. Being aware of these signs can help you provide support to your loved ones and seek help when necessary. Individuals who are being bullied may exhibit the following signs: - Unexplained injuries - Changes in sleeping and eating patterns - Pretending to be sick or claiming to feel unwell - Headaches and stomachaches - Avoiding social situations, including those involving previously close friends - Decreased self-esteem - Self-harm or other dangerous behaviors - Losing personal possessions - Declining academic performance On the other hand, individuals who are bullying others may display the following signs: - Engaging in physical altercations - Getting into trouble more frequently at school - Becoming more aggressive - Associating with individuals who bully other.

I have had firsthand experience of the destructive consequences of workplace bullying. I have written my account of it as fiction. Synopsis: Riley is prohibited from speaking about his experiences by a 'compromise agreement'. Barsteadworth College therefore uses fiction as means of analysing the issues. Dan Ripley, a Fine Art Lecturer, moves from Manchester and takes a job at a provincial art college in the south of England. After a time, a new manager arrives and starts to appoint friends and family and to create preferential working conditions for herself and her clique. Those outside of the clique are then subjected to a wide range of undermining activities from their line-manager, including staged public humiliations at meetings, unmanageable workloads and endlessly contradictory instructions. The book describes the gradual corrosive effects of the bullying: fatigue, loss of confidence, confusion and then depression. It then describes what happens when Dan complains: the college's managers close ranks and connive with the bullying line-manager to discredit the allegations, eliminate evidence and vilify the complainant.
