Educational consultancy: “We found the school that matches our values and our son’s aspirations”
Issue 30: UK Boarding Schools Week News
Last night Tracey and I were out for supper with a long-standing friend and former head.
I reflected that the reason why I love my job is that we receive frequent feedback from parents – and how we helped them choose the right school for their children.
A few weekends ago at UK Boarding Schools Week in Nigeria, I interviewed a mother asking her what difference it made working with an experienced, educational consultant.
“Mark Brooks helped us to navigate through the complex admissions process easily,” she said.
“He has unrivalled access to a network of schools in the UK and unmatched expertise in the admissions process”.
She commented that “As a family it was easy for us to get a school for our son in a hitch-free, seamless and professional manner".
Most importantly “the school matches our family's values and our son's aspirations and capabilities".
St Edward’s Oxford: “A vision for modern boarding”
It was one of the most impressive school visits for a long time – a genuine welcome, exceptional guide, a buzz among the predominantly boarding community and an air of academic excellence.
Alistair Chirnside , Warden (Head) says: “There has never been a more exciting time to be at St Edward's School, Oxford ,” and I can now understand why.
He explains “There is the strength of the community, grounded in a spirt of inclusion and built on an ethos of collaboration.”
Prisca, the Head girl who is from Nigeria, proudly showed me the array of outstanding facilities ranging from homely boarding, state of the art theatre, award-winning library sixth form café… and I could go on.
But more importantly, she told me that her father back home also felt connected to the community.?

He is regularly updated with Prisca’s progress and achievements through formal updates and online meetings and a virtual 'open door.'
She also explained that she feels incredibly well supported by her house parents and tutors.?
They meet with her each week to ensure that she manages her time, workload and co-curricular opportunities efficiently.
It is clear from my visit that Alastair is committed to his philosophy: “there must be opportunity for all to take part and for all to excel”.

"Happiness underpins academic success" at QE
On a recent visit to York to meet the Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate senior leadership team, we asked Lauren Blakeley , Head of the Faculty, what makes the school unique.
She explained: "We have a family dynamic where the students and the staff work together to ensure that they are safe and happy, and have their best well-being."
Lauren adds that she thinks "that atmosphere is quite unique."
The students have "all the support if they want to access it. They have got teams that really care about them."
She concludes that "All of the effort that has gone into taking great care of our students, making a home away from home, also underpins the academic success that we have."
"When students are happy, it leads to the most successful outcomes."
