Education, Education, Education!
As a famous British Prime Minster once said......
I recently had the privilege of joining UNICEF on a working visit to the Central Region of Ghana to see first hand the impact of the programmes put in place by UNICEF, with the support of Hapag-Lloyd.
We received a very warm welcome from Mrs. Betty Kurentsiwa Smith, the Municipal Director for Education in the Mfantsiman municipality, and her team. We had an opportunity to meet with headteachers and community leaders from the area who explained the impact that UNICEF's work has had, especially in the area of encouraging girls to attend school or to stay in school and also assisting young mothers to remain in education.
We were also very fortunate to be able to join the day of two schools, Biriwa Methodist 'B' Basic School and Saltpond Lower Town M/A 'B' Basic School. We are grateful for them in allowing us to disrupt their normal school days with our presence.....it was a rewarding experience seeing the day to day life of the students and staff at these schools and to also hear directly from them some of the challenges they face in ensuring a good education is available. It is clear there remains work to be done but it is encouraging to see the progress being made through the hard work and dedication of the local teams and with the support of UNICEF. Thank you to all who made the day possible with special thanks to Christin and Rhoda from UNICEF for facilitating this trip.
