2- Regional Advancement

  • The Saudi school system is embracing the West

Saudi Arabia is making strides in modernizing its educational curriculum, as highlighted by a recent report from the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (IMPACT-se). The review of 371 textbooks revealed significant changes, such as the removal of violent jihad endorsements, antisemitic language, and gender-biased content. These alterations are in line with the country’s broader goals of economic development, modernization, and fostering better relations with the West. As Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) continues to drive his vision for the future, these textbook updates reflect a commitment to inclusivity, peace, and tolerance in education.

?

Why it’s important: These changes are pivotal as they represent a shift towards a more progressive educational system in Saudi Arabia, promoting values of tolerance and gender equality. the reforms may encourage Lebanese students to pursue higher education in Saudi Arabia, strengthening academic and cultural ties between the two countries. From another perspective, universities like the American University of Beirut (AUB) could see challenges, as students might opt to study in Saudi Arabia instead. However, this could also be an opportunity for institutions like AUB to expand their presence and consider opening new campuses in Saudi Arabia, tapping into the growing educational market and fostering academic collaboration.
