Educating to avoid accidents

Educating to avoid accidents

With the focus today on World Day for safety and health at work, we look at accidents. According to Dictionary.com, Accidents 'are an undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally and usually results in harm, injury, damage, or loss; casualty; mishap'. Each year, more research is being done to help mitigate the risks of accidents happening.??

Ah, health and safety, I hear you say!??

But it's more than that. It's about imparting knowledge, expertise, and expert findings and raising that awareness via good communications. But how do we ensure people act and adhere to those findings? Well, that's down to us, all of us. For your part, it's about your health and safety systems, process, communications, and culture. And of course, ensuring that your people attend good quality training.?

From Ligtas, as you would expect, we are your partner, ensuring that you have everything you need to fulfill your promises and obligations to the organisation.?

As an example of training excellence, Ligtas have had over 1000 IOSH course enrolments in the first quarter of this year. In other training news. Earlier this year, we were delighted to announce that all our NEBOSH Construction (New Syllabus) course delegates achieved a pass and that the course delegates achieved a 100% pass rate for our first class in the classroom for 18 months! ?

That's what we call excellence and innovation in learning.?

We truly care about health and safety, our people, our community, and the environment in which we work. We will continue to work tirelessly in the pursuit of educating people on the risks and help implement strategies for business so that everyone goes home safe at night, free from workplace illness and injury.?

And if none of us cares, then what??

Injuries and illnesses sustained in the workplace are detrimental to the economy and cost lives each year. Not to mention they cause damage to the company's reputation and the legal consequences. Therefore, to mitigate the risks of workplace injury and illness, we believe health and safety training is fundamental. ??

To an outsider looking, training is training. However, our training has been designed in such a way that we consider how the brain functions so that the student's learning is thoroughly embedded. By giving businesses a psychological perception of the dangers, they can better understand those dangers. The concepts of detection and interpretation are vital for understanding risks.?

Let's dive into a quick psychology lesson…?

In psychology, different theories relate to risks and planned behaviour. The 'Theory of planned behaviour', (Ajzen, 1985), is based on the theory of a person's intention to perform a set behaviour. The more the person wants to engage in behaviour change, the more likely they will.??

Another theory, 'The Health Belief Model', (Rosenstock, 1974) proposes if the perceived threat is real and personal, they are more likely to change to avoid that threat if its consequences are serious enough. But that threat must outweigh any barriers like costs for the person to initiate change.?

Ok, that's the quick psychology lesson over.

When the students return to their place of work, because of excellent training, they are ready to implement best practices and really change working environments. This focus on best practices in learning means safer working environments.??

How does that apply to businesses??

Well, it's much the same. The benefit of change (implementing safe practices) and not doing that must have serious consequences.??

To mitigate these serious consequences, it's not just training. It's a combination of training and consultancy. It’s also working with a company who don’t just tick boxes. With over 25 years of experience, we share best practices with you to bring key concepts to life. Through a UK-wide team of experts, we work with you as a trusted learning provider to provide health and safety training online, classroom, and virtual classrooms.??
