Mental Wellness Across all Sectors

Mental Wellness Across all Sectors

This year, like every year, the SXSW EDU team participates in a retreat to reflect on the completed season, as we begin to make plans for next year’s SXSW EDU. This year’s retreat was especially powerful and centering for the team.

In part, the grounding came from the team’s visit to a prominent local school, the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, an all-girls public school serving grades 6-12 in the Austin Independent School District.

Wellness is a priority at Ann Richards. The school community prides itself on a commitment to the whole person, noting successful students and leaders need a healthy body, mind, and spirit. The wellness program at the school provides students with the knowledge and tools to make healthy choices in a supportive environment.

A few attributes of the school’s attention to wellness included a “Kindness Wall” where students left supportive notes to be retrieved by other students whenever they needed a moment of kindness. In visiting with the school’s leadership, we enjoyed learning they are identifying grade-level leaders for the wellness support of faculty and students.

I’d be remiss not to observe that the crowd-sourced program at this year’s SXSW EDU also squarely addressed mental health and wellness. Topics with either audio recordings or full session videos available include How Youth Sports Can Help Solve the Mental Health Crises , Ecosystem of Well-being: Mental Health at In-Between Spaces , Mental Health in Higher Education: From Theory to Practice , as well as our powerful closing keynote from Yung Pueblo, Unlocking Your Best Self for Yourself & Others . I encourage you to check them out as you are able.

In short, it’s such a powerful question to ask someone how they are doing. I leave you with these words – please be attentive to your own mental health and to those around you.

Take care, Ron

Hi SXSW team, I completely agree with Ronald Reed's sentiment on the growing importance of mental wellness in all areas of our lives. It's reassuring to see that more attention is being given to this important aspect of our well-being. As a society, we often neglect our mental health and focus solely on physical health. But, with the increasing prevalence of stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues, it's crucial that we prioritize our mental wellness as well. I'm glad that SXSW EDU is addressing this issue and highlighting its relevance and importance in all sectors. It's important for us to continue having these conversations and implementing strategies for promoting mental wellness in our workplaces, schools, and homes. Thank you for sharing this insightful post. Looking forward to reading the full edition of the Insider. Best, Allon
