As the pandemic hit the nation, and things were looking bleak, there were a few saviours who ensured that all was not dull and grey. One of them was the ed-tech companies that stepped up and graciously provided educational resources and support to students. Many of them carved a niche for themselves and became the talk of the town, being the rising stars in an otherwise gloomy horizon.?
But after the ebb of the pandemic flow, only a few of them could continue to catch up with the changing situation and trends. So does that mean ed-tech will become just a one-battle winner? Well, no. This is due to two factors: first, the sudden explosion of AI and its uses, and second, the union government's allocation of Rs 1.12 lakh crores for education.?
In this edition of “The People Weekly”, we will discuss what are the trends to look out for in the Ed-tech industry, and the evolving career options in the Ed-tech industry.
Trends in Ed-tech Industry in 2023
Before we discuss the trends in the Ed-tech industry, let us first define the Ed-tech ecosystem. Apart from the K12 segment, Ed-tech also comprises higher education platforms that offer degrees as well as certification courses, platforms providing career development and certification courses, individual businesses that cater to the knowledge space, tuition providers and teachers who offer online courses in their individual capacity. However, let us, for this discussion, consider only those players that have the technical bandwidth to provide education digitally with the help of technology viz, skills development, test preparation, K12 and online certification.?
Increased use of AI? and ML with a focus on adaptive learning.?
AI and ML will be used more than ever to create content that will cater to each student according to their capabilities. No students are the same when it comes to learning and Ed-tech having opened the possibility for a path away from traditional classroom teaching will now focus on tailor-made content for each student as per their learning needs.?
More Gamification to enhance student learning and experience
Interactive and engaging learning is now the buzzword. Gamification is a technique to make learning interesting and enhance the student experience. It also helps in retention and makes complex concepts simple and easy to understand.? From USD 450 million in the year 2018, the game-based learning market has already grown to USD 1800 million and is projected to grow to 42.3 billion USD by 2028.? Moreover the concept of learn- to-earn with the use of metaverse and crypto is going to be the next big thing in gamification.?
Wider Application of Augmented Reality and Virtual reality?
Augmented reality or virtual reality provides learners with immersive learning experiences. Although fundamentally different from each other, AR and VR together called mixed reality, can bring abstract concepts to life by visualising complex subjects in a more interactive and three-dimensional way. Students can explore everything from historical events and scientific processes to architectural designs and engineering concepts in a more engaging manner. More and more Ed-tech companies are now investing in providing an immersive learning experience through augmented reality. Though this trend is slower than the others, the use of AR/VR is catching up.
