How Google's Monopoly Affects Search Quality by Jeff Dillon

The quality of search results is one of the most visible aspects of Google’s dominance. Google’s search engine has evolved over the years to prioritize not just relevance but also advertisements and monetization. Critics argue that because Google doesn’t face significant competition, it has less incentive to focus purely on delivering the best search results for users. Instead, its business model incentivizes prioritizing paid content and ads over organic, unbiased results.

Recently, AI-generated overviews have been added to search results, further complicating the issue. These overviews, which serve as an amalgamation of information snippets often pulled from disparate, pre-existing resources, frequently appear at the top of search engine results pages (SERPs), pushing organic results even further down. The reliability of these AI-generated answers is also under scrutiny, as we often don’t know if we can fully trust the accuracy of the information they provide.

Are You Headed to INSPIRE 24 or EDUCAUSE in October?

This Fall is shaping up to be an exciting one for TimelyGrader ! We’re getting ready to attend two major conferences—INSPIRE 2024 hosted in the UCLA Luksin Conference Center, and EDUCAUSE 2024 in San Antonio-where we will showcase the power of AI-assisted grading and feedback.

At INSPIRE 2024 , we’ll be exploring how tools like TimelyGrader can help make grading more efficient for teachers while giving students better, faster feedback. We’ve partnered with institutions such as Calbright College, Arizona State University, and more to revolutionize the validation of student learning.

Then, at EDUCAUSE 2024 , we’ll be joining thought leaders and educators from across our partners to discuss how using TimelyGrader has already resulted in significant improvements in instructor and student outcomes such as:

  • 60% reduction in instructor time spent on grading
  • 6X the amount of feedback provided to students
  • A full letter grade improvement in final submissions

Here’s what one instructor had to say about her usage of TimelyGrader, “It is a life-saver to me!” Our AI-assisted platform maintains the human-in-the-loop while giving back valuable time to the instructors.

If you are attending or will be in the area, please come check out our booths at both conferences! You can also book a meeting with our founder, Chris Du, directly for a 1-on-1 demonstration of the platform and how it can work for you and your instructors.
