2/?TRADE REPORT

Industrial Sector Trade Report - June 2024

Here is the link to the GCP Trade Report for June 2024. This report provides ongoing insights and perspectives on the various trade and cost challenges we are navigating together. Review the highlights of the report:

  • According to the Institute for Supply Management Price Index, raw material prices increased in May for the fifth month in a row after eight consecutive months of decline.
  • Global economic conditions further improved last month, supported by faster expansion across many sectors and regions. However, manufacturing costs have started to rise at a more pronounced rate.
  • April was the fourth consecutive month and 14th of the past 15 months where Mexico has been the No. 1 exporter of goods to the U.S. Since the start of the year, imports to the U.S. from Mexico have out paced that from China by over $33.5 billion.
  • Overall U.S. trade (imports + exports) rose substantially growing by $10.1 billion from the pervious month. Total trade volume is up 4.7% from a year ago, with exports up 5.1% and imports up 4.5%.
  • Shipping volumes on transpacific routes remain very strong exceeding last year’s numbers. This despite structural blank sailings and longer trips due to routing around the Cape of Good Hope.
  • Monthly imports to U.S. container ports are expected to reach their highest level in nearly two years this summer.
  • Freight rates from Asia to N. America West Coast are now 120-190% above January’s pricing. East Coast rates are now 85-125% higher than the start of the year. Rates for both lanes have not been this high since their comedown from pandemic highs in the summer and fall of 2022.
  • Some seasonality is returning to the truckload marketplace, with load-to-truck ratios rising for dry van and reefer freight. Typically, higher temperatures bring both higher shipping volumes and higher rates.

Explore these topics in greater detail by reading the full report linked below.

This month's report is 2,442 words long and takes approximately 8 minutes to read.
