The WIE Suite
A membership community for women leaders and culture creators (we're hiring)
Dear Women Who Do,
Opportunities are around every corner. Meet this week's WIE Suite Woman, Sarah Anyieth, who took a shot on herself when she saw a market opportunity to launch her own vegan chocolate line. And, learn about the positive movement for women CEOs in 2023 (it's been a long time coming). Finally, where are the opportunities in today's challenging financial markets? Barron's Carleton English provides insight.
We also have an opportunity, as we step into Pride month, to even more aggressively champion and support our LGBTQIA+ heroes. Please take time to follow icons including fellow WIE Suite member GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis, actress and activist Lena Waithe, Geena Rocero who has just released a new book titled Horse Barbie, Founder & President of the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth Shamina Singh and award-winning activist, author, and media strategist Raquel Willis.

Entrepreneur Sarah Anyieth of Nhair Chocolates Shares Tips for Those Scaling A Side Hustle
Sarah has over 15 years of experience in accounting and financial leadership roles including leading large-scale transformations programs, adoptions of new accounting pronouncements, and targeted close acceleration/cycle reduction projects focused on the record-to-report process. In March 2020, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Sarah wanted to share with people a bit of sweetness during a difficult time. She channeled her passion for food into Nhi?r.
What did your background in management consulting teach you that you had to unlearn as you focused on chocolate?
My background actually helped me to be better at growing the chocolate company. Understanding the financials, the barriers to scale, distribution and how to run a business. I will say, however, that it is very different running a multi-billion dollar organization compared to a start-up chocolate company.
Move the Needle
Opportunities Available to Female CEOs in 2023
While we often lament the challenges facing women stepping into the C-Suite, these leaders believe there is also opportunity.
In our recent research on the C-Suite, Ida Tin, former CEO and now Chairwoman of Clue, emphasized the opportunity for women leaders to shape the world - or at least the organization - around them. “I think we often feel that the context we’re in doesn’t bring out the best of us, that somehow we have more to offer, but it isn’t welcomed or recognized or teased out of us. I believe that we can shape our world to fit us more than we maybe realize, especially as leaders. We might have to do a set of specific things (board meetings, meetings with direct reports, all hands, etc) but we have a say in how we do these things - and it’s up to us to have the courage to make them fit us - and hopefully make them better for all in the process.”
There’s also incredible opportunity to bring other women along and make progress on the so-called “broken rung problem," shared WIE SUITE member Melanie Goldey, CEO of Tally Health. “One of the most impactful things we can do is to harness our networks to open doors for others on the rise. Connect women to others who have access to opportunities – recommend and advocate for women for a big job or promotion, or simply connect a woman to someone else who is just a great person for her to know because there could someday be a great opportunity that comes out of it. There is so much power in leveraging the cumulative reach of our individual networks. Beyond making connections, we can also invest time in mentoring rising stars, providing them with one-on-one counsel as they navigate up and aim for the C-Suite.”

Carleton English of Barron's on Making Sense of a Challenging Financial Market
Carleton English is a reporter at Barron’s, where she covers banking, activist investing, and markets. Prior to joining Barron’s, Carleton covered hedge funds and other Wall Street shenanigans for The New York Post, was a writer at TheStreet.com and a producer at CNBC.
What do you do in a complicated financial market?
"It's a question I get a lot whenever I do talks like this, or whenever I say what I do, people are always like, oh, what should I invest in, should I do this? The first thing, everyone wants a magic answer. And this is a tough time. No one knows. No one has absolute certainty about what's going to be happening in the world. The best thing that all of us can do is stay organized, stay informed."
