Edition #9: November dreams

Welcome back to the Leader Curations newsletter. I publish this newsletter about every two weeks and deliver a Research Snack, a Good News Nibble, and an Action Nugget that will help you be an informed and impactful leader. I preface those items with a little personal story or observation from the preceding weeks. Hopefully the lessons from these stories and the leadership tidbits are thought-provoking.

Especially if this is your time here, thanks for stopping by. You can learn more about me here .

Butterflies can power inclusion!

I often get asked why I wrote a book and?why?there are?#butterflies ?on the cover. You have probably?heard the book's origin story?(Spring 2020, execs not getting honest feedback, I know some things that can help, I should write a book). But maybe you haven't heard about the butterflies.?Here's MY BUTTERFLY WHY:

Butterflies represent???????????????????????????&?i???????????????????????????. Humans think butterflies are beautiful, regardless of their color or pattern variations. Wouldn’t it be cool if we looked at humans the same way? Butterflies also represent????????#???????????????????????????? ???????????. Their lives are evidence that good can come from change. Developing an inclusion mindset can lead to positive change.?The "Butterfly Effect" represents????????????????????????????????????????????????????????. Once you try one inclusion action, you can start a positive ripple effect. And?last week, my dear friend Liz sent me the scarf I am holding in the photo above. Butterflies make humans happy!

But,?only 30% of their employers offered health insurance that includes coverage for mental health .?Eighty-one (81) percent said?they would?consider employer support for mental health as they make future work choices. Heads up, employers! Do your 2023 health insurance plan offerings include mental health care coverage?

November is National American Indian Heritage Month . According to the National Congress of American Indians this is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and how tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.” I am reading the two books above and?learning more here, via the Smithsonian, about the indigenous lands on which I live and work. ??And a genuinely insightful piece from Jennifer R. Farmer

Action Nugget

#Layoffs seem to be a?standard part of the American business cycle . I have long been fascinated by this cycle, and my Ph.D. dissertation, completed eons ago, sought to understand the criteria leaders use to decide who will stay and who will go. I have known, since then, that leaders usually cannot spell out the criteria they use to evaluate individual employees as they make layoff decisions. That means employees cannot control, predict, or overwork your way out of getting laid off. Instead, you need a long-term career strategy. Get my “10 Ways to Layoff Proof Your Career” tips?here . And here are some additional resources that will be useful for anyone planning, concerned about, or dealing with a layoff.

An extra thing

Many people have asked me about my book journey. To demystify the book development journey, I am hosting a special FREE “Ask Me Anything” event on Wednesday, November 16, at 11 am Eastern. In this session, I will share my book development journey and answer your questions about how you can get your book into the world.?RSVP?here .
