I led a medical volunteer organization where medical students were trained to check for vital signs, e.g., blood pressure, body mass index, glucose metabolic rate, etc., and I repeatedly used the Cycle of Empowerment. This is how it goes:


I give theoretical training first to a set of medical students. Then I perform the procedures, allowing them observe me and ask questions. Thereafter, I ask them to perform the procedures under my full supervision. As they get better, I then allow them to perform the procedures under minimal supervision. And as they attain full competency, I allow them to perform the procedures without supervision. After attaining this point, I pair these skilled volunteers with new volunteers and ask them to train them while I observe them teach and train others.

THIS IS THE CYCLE OF EMPOWERMENT.

Using my example, the blessings and benefits of empowering others are TWO-FOLD: On one hand, I feel fulfilled because I am passing on knowledge and training other future physicians. Furthermore, the more skilled volunteers I have on my team, the less work I have to do and the greater responsibilities we can handle. God helping us, our medical organization actually grew astronomically to the point we were invited by major corporations and government institutions to give free health screenings to their staff and customers.

On the other hand, my beloved future physicians feel fulfilled and empowered because they are gaining more experiential knowledge, building their leadership skills, and increasing their confidence in patient healthcare.

The same principle applies to any profession, organization, or institution.

??PROVIDE THE RIGHT TOOLS AND RESOURCES. Ensure your team has access to the tools, technology, and resources they need to perform their tasks efficiently. Invest in training and development to enhance their skills and keep them updated with industry trends.

??ENCOURAGE CONTINUOUS LEARNING. Promote a culture of continuous learning. Support professional development through workshops, courses, and conferences. Encourage team members to pursue new skills and knowledge that can benefit their roles and the organization.

??RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENTS. Acknowledging and celebrating achievements boosts morale and motivation. Regularly recognize individual and team accomplishments, whether through formal awards, public praise, or simple gestures of appreciation.

??BUILD A COLLABORATIVE CULTURE. Foster a culture that values collaboration over competition. Encourage teamwork, shared goals, and collective problem-solving. Create opportunities for cross-functional projects that leverage diverse skills and perspectives.

??SET CLEAR GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS. Define specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals and communicate them effectively. Ensure each team member understands their role in achieving these goals and how their contributions impact the bigger picture.

??PROVIDE AUTONOMY AND FLEXIBILITY. Grant your team the autonomy to make decisions and manage their work. Flexible work arrangements, such as remote work or flexible hours, can enhance job satisfaction and productivity. Trust your team to deliver results in their own way.

??PROVIDE FEEDBACK, MENTOR AND SUPPORT GROWTH. Provide feedback and act as a mentor to your team members. Offer guidance, support, and career development opportunities. Help them identify their strengths and areas for growth, and provide resources to help them advance their careers. Regularly review progress and provide constructive feedback.

??ENCOURAGE INNOVATION AND RISK-TAKING. Create an environment where innovation and risk-taking are encouraged. Allow your team to experiment with new ideas and approaches without fear of failure. Celebrate creative solutions and learn from any mistakes.?
