Edition 74 - VIP Treatment

Edition 74 - VIP Treatment

Having been recently hired by a fantastic company, I am excited by the newness and the environment in which I am learning about the new company and their culture. Everything is wonderful and terrifying at the same time.

At some point the newness will wear off a bit, but hopefully the excitement will still remain as I get to know the team and settle in to my new role.

When we start a new role or continue our career with a new company, there is a period in which we get to ask a lot of questions in an attempt to understand the mechanics and dynamics of a new company and a new environment. There is a lot of busyness as well, as we get familiar with all the logistics of new equipment, systems, and processes.

I like to call this the grace period. Some call it the honeymoon period. All is exciting and new for a while, but at some point work has to get done.

During this period, we take the time to understand our new surroundings and gain our footing, but our desire to have an immediate impact may lead us to making a mistake or two. Stepping on toes is not all that uncommon. Faux pas happen as well, which can erode some trust right up front. However, the grace period is mostly a pretty exciting time.

During the grace period we experience what I call the VIP Treatment. You are a new employee with fire and passion for your new role and you are excited about everything. The onboarding process can be daunting in some companies and there can be a lot to learn. People are generally understanding of the challenges one can face as a new employee, which is very much appreciated.

How we operate while in the grace period and when receiving the VIP Treatment can determine how we are perceived by our new colleagues. Just as grace is poured out on us as new employees, we must also return that grace by our desire to learn and also express appreciation for those who take the time to help us along.

I had written previously about how important it is to have an advocate and be an advocate to new employees, making their onboarding experience smoother and being there for them to more easily adapt to the culture. We all have an impact to make, whether we be the new employee or if we are the one helping a new employee onboard. Here is a link to that article:

When it comes down to it, we all need a little help when we find ourselves in a new company, new role, new city, new relationship etc. A little VIP treatment helps.
