Introduction
Finding a Mentor can be challenging for African entrepreneurs because access to someone whose skills and experience align with an entrepreneur's needs can be difficult.
One of the best ways to find Mentors is by attending conferences focused on their areas of interest because many industry leaders and experienced entrepreneurs also attend.
Last week, I attended an African conference for Startups and Venture Capitalists and the profiles of the speakers and participants was impressive.
An ideal setting for an entrepreneur looking for a Mentor!
To be successful in finding the right Mentor, the entrepreneur still has to be intentional, plan and follow the right steps.
Before the Conference
Must have prepared their mentorship goals and a mind map of their ideal Mentor.
Research the profiles of the participants in the conference brochures or online through platforms such as LinkedIn
Make a shortlist of those that they would like to meet
Some conferences offer platforms for delegates to arrange meetings prior to the conference and the entrepreneur must utilize such platforms.
Mentoring is a 2 way relationship - the entrepreneur must think carefully about the value that they can bring to the relationship because the Mentor also expects to be learning.
During the Conference
Engage actively in the proceedings of the Conference and be visible.
Introduce yourself to potential Mentors, exchange business cards and use your elevator pitch to explain your business.
Network extensively and consider other potential Mentors from the other delegates that you meet at the Conference.
After the Conference
Within 48 hours, follow up with potential Mentors via email to express your gratitude and maintain the connection.
Be strategic and patient because Mentors are usually busy people and building a relationship can take time.
Continue to nurture the relationship, before requesting the first meeting with your Mentor.
