How Oli Webb is Bringing the Human Element to Code19's Human-Centered Approach to Autonomy

The entry into the autonomous world came as much of a shock to me as it did to my fellow driving colleagues! I’ve always observed the progress in the background, from Roborace back in the day to Super Formula A2RL cars now doing over 200 kph around F1 tracks.

We were testing at Dubai Autodrome one time when I saw fellow driver Daniil Kvyat driving an SF car, followed by an automated one driving itself afterward. Ryan, my teammate at the time, was intrigued, and the rest is history. Now, we sit with Code19 entering the 2025 season with A2RL, having performed tests around the world on both GT cars and single-seaters. These tests range from data capturing to software and hardware evaluations.

It was a new world to me at first, but also familiar in many ways. Familiar in the sense that everything still revolved around the car being able to physically execute what was asked of it. That’s where my input came in—to translate what the software and hardware teams envisioned into something physically achievable, and to determine the best approach from both a driving and engineering perspective.

From tire warm-up procedures to brake and throttle application traces, managing heat and temperature issues, ensuring car balance, and adapting to changing weather conditions, I’ve worked across a variety of challenges. It’s been an incredible project to be a part of so far, and I can’t wait to get back on track with the team soon.

COTA AI Summit | #Austin #Texas

Next week, the Code19 team will gather in Austin, Texas, for an exclusive invite only two-day summit. This event is designed to bring together leading innovators and emerging startups at the fascinating crossroads of artificial intelligence, #defense, and #motorsports. On the first day, introductory events will take place in Austin, setting the stage for an exciting second day at the renowned Circuit of the Americas.
