Technology
??????????? The 4th industrial revolution presents both the allure and the difficulty of the proliferation of technological instruments that provide unprecedented prospects for enhanced productivity. Undoubtedly, technology plays a crucial role in bringing together people and procedures throughout your firm, enabling you to carry out your goal with greater efficiency. Consider the significant enhancement in our quality of life attributable to technological advancements. This also applies to companies. Paradoxically, the growing abundance of technological instruments has become an obstacle for some organizations. Implementing technology only for the sake of technology, or due to peer pressure or a sense of obligation, does not ensure that it will simplify life. Conversely, it might also lead to failure. Several corporate executives invest significant amounts of money in new technology, only to eventually discard it due to its failure to effectively integrate with their workforce and operational procedures. Without a certain solution, if your personnel and procedures are unprepared, the outcomes are often unsatisfactory.
??????????? There are two major categories that may be used to classify the technology that a business utilizes: operational technology and competitive advantage technology. It is necessary to have operational technology in order to efficiently run the organization's business in order to accomplish its objective. On the other side, the objective of the technology that will be used to provide competitive advantage will be to offer the business mission of the company with a competitive edge.
Platform Focus
??????????? Companies sometimes consist of many "point systems" that operate autonomously from one other. For instance, they may own an accounting platform, a distinct HR platform, a different quality system, and so on. Subsequently, they will endeavor to establish connections across these diverse software platforms in order to facilitate collaboration among teams. Nevertheless, integrations often suffer from inefficiency, disorder, and unreliability.
Now, let's examine the current condition of the organization, where productivity has declined despite your increased technological resources. What is the issue? Humans are encountering difficulties in the process of developing and managing integrations. Similar to how the velocity of air combat surpassed the limitations of human capabilities during the Vietnam War, the pace of the retail industry has beyond what people are capable of managing. Indeed, several retail organizations have lagged behind due to their inability to compete with innovative enterprises such as Amazon. What are the successful strategies used by Amazon? Their platform is singularly focused on a certain objective, rather than being a collection of numerous platforms that are poorly linked.
Undoubtedly, the firms that excel in Industry 4.0 will use platforms such as AWS to provide a common operating picture (COP) across their whole enterprises. Factories may now consolidate all their data into a unified digital manufacturing cloud. Envision a colossal organization with the capability to access any of their facilities at will, equipped with a common operating picture (COP) map that displays precise daily earnings for each facility, along with real-time updates on performance against targets and other crucial data. Consider the scenario when several processes are automated across all of the company's factories, synchronized with a shared operational overview, and capable of acting and responding at a level of speed that beyond what a human-machine interface might achieve.
??????????? Instead of seeing your organization as a set of separate systems, or "point systems," that carry out certain activities, establish a unified operational view - a solitary "source of truth" containing your data. The whole of the data converged into a single integrated mission platform. Many firms regularly attempt to integrate many disparate technological instruments, but often encounter difficulties due to their lack of compatibility. Teams are struggling to consolidate all of the data into a single location. Ultimately, what you want is a comprehensive and integrated mission platform that spans all of your separate systems, consolidating all data throughout your business and establishing a shared operational view that influences all aspects of your operations. Adopt this mindset and approach your technological instruments in this manner. By doing so, it will enhance the analytics and facilitate ongoing enhancements across all of your platforms.
Lifecycle Management: Continuous Asset Management
??????????? Many corporate firms often lack a strong commitment to lifecycle management. Leaders convey to individuals, "I am not concerned unless you are expending an amount exceeding one hundred thousand." Adopt a proactive approach rather than relying on a reactive mindset of running a task until it breaks, then doing necessary repairs or maintenance, and repeating this cycle. Predictive maintenance should be integrated into the lifecycle management practices of corporate enterprises, enabling maintenance planning based on the anticipated lifespan of equipment, systems, and software. Avoid procrastinating until something becomes dysfunctional. Instead, they established precise benchmarks for repairing and rebuilding.
??????????? Numerous firms function in a state of near chaos, anticipating the occurrence of unforeseen problems and desperately hope that they do not arise during periods of production backlog. Having a mindset focused on optimizing equipment for maximum efficiency leads to reduced expenses in the long run. Furthermore, with the advent of Industry 4.0, there are now a plethora of tools available to accurately assess the performance of your equipment.? It is crucial to comprehend that this type of predictive maintenance will have even more significance in Industry 4.0, when all systems are networked within a unified platform.
??????????? Establish an Inspection and Survey Board (INSURV) to perform rigorous inspections of all equipment, systems, and software every five years. Additionally, conduct equipment drills to ensure proper functionality and proficiency of personnel. These inspections were far more rigorous and distressing. However, if the organization adopts this mindset, it will guarantee that investing a substantial amount of money in capital and operational expenses will result in extracting maximum value from it. Instead of basing the organization of the maintenance team on failures, adopt continuous lifecycle management. This involves planning for the entire lifespan of each equipment, system, or software, and regularly rebuilding, repairing, and replacing necessary modules at specific milestones. This approach will ensure that the company's technology remains up-to-date throughout its lifespan.
Condition-Based Monitoring: Connected and Integrated Systems
??????????? Amazon utilizes condition-based monitoring to continuously track every parcel in real-time. They possess precise knowledge of the location of your shipment and will provide visual documentation of the box upon its delivery to your doorstep. The database and analytics capabilities of Amazon are genuinely remarkable. Jeff Bezos coined the term "Day 1 and Day 2 companies." According to his explanation, a Day 1 organization prioritizes achieving targeted outcomes quickly by focusing on actual results rather than using indirect measures and adapting to changing conditions as necessary. Conversely, firms on Day 2 often become entrenched in outdated procedures that may no longer be relevant due to advancements in technology, shifts in the market, and other factors. As a result, a company that is in its second day of operation tends to make decisions and respond to challenges at a slower pace.
??????????? In 1991, Warren Bennis, a renowned business strategist, made a notable statement: "The future factory will employ only two individuals, a human and a canine." The individual will be present to provide sustenance to the canine. The dog will serve as a deterrent to prevent the man from making contact with the apparatus. Although this outcome has not yet been fully realized, condition-based monitoring has undeniably allowed firms to align their personnel, procedures, and technology with a level of clarity that was previously unattainable.
??????????? Condition-based monitoring has significantly facilitated the alignment of firms' personnel, procedures, and technology with a level of clarity that was before unattainable. Perceiving visual information consistently and comprehensively is the key to generating a shared understanding of a situation is the efficacy of condition-based monitoring. By always maintaining a thorough understanding of the status of all your assets, you will be better equipped to adapt to the accelerating pace of business in industry 4.0.

Human/Machine Interface: Taking the Human Out Of The Loop
??????????? The objective is not to eliminate individuals, but rather to examine safety concerns and labor expenses in order to determine the most suitable areas for removing human involvement. Enhance the efficiency of human utilization for alternative tasks. By adopting intelligent automation, we can replace the need for a human to manually press a button, thereby eliminating the role of the Director Monkey. By showcasing the effectiveness of automating repetitive operations, we aim to convince top leaders to abandon the use of yellow notepads. This involves removing human involvement and allowing algorithms to perform these jobs. Optimize performance by leveraging the strengths of both humans and robots. Assign humans to creative problem-solving jobs, where they excel, while computers handle monotonous and repetitive chores that tend to overwhelm humans. Adopting a mindset that values the appropriate pace of progress is crucial for attaining improved results.
