Labour's proposed new employment rights in the UK

After the Labour Party’s landslide victory, it is important to get up to date with their new proposals for employment rights in the UK.

The Labour Party have laid out their new plans for the "Make Work Pay" initiative, which they intend will significantly change employment rights for UK employees.

The manifesto sets out what they intend to change, some of which includes:

  • Introducing a day-one right to statutory sick pay, parental leave and for many businesses - unfair dismissal (probationary periods to assess new hires may still stand)
  • An extension of tribunal time limits for bringing all claims from three months to six months
  • Banning “exploitative” zero-hours contracts (as opposed to an outright ban)
  • A right for employees to have a contract which reflects the hours they regularly work, based on a twelve-week reference period
  • Introducing a right to ‘switch off’

Labour have promised to publish an Employment Bill within 100 days of the General Election. They have made it clear they are eager to make swift progress with the changes, however, some may take a year or two to come to fruition.

Organisations of all sizes will be affected, and employers need to start planning ahead.

It is also advisable that management are updated on what it could mean, to the way staff are managed; especially in circumstances where workers may receive day-one rights.

Health and Safety

Did you know The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations require employers to provide a reasonable indoor temperature in the workplace?

Where the site is outdoors, you must provide protection from adverse weather. Site rest facilities must also be maintained at an appropriate temperature.

With summer heating up and following the Met Office’s yellow heat warning during the heatwave, it’s important to know the guidelines regarding high temperatures at work.

Like any other hazard, heat requires appropriate risk assessments and procedures.

During hot weather, employers should always:

  • Assess the risk to workers
  • Put controls in place to protect them
