EDITION 3 : NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH - A CATALYST FOR FOSTERING A MENTORSHIP CULTURE

EDITION 3 : NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH - A CATALYST FOR FOSTERING A MENTORSHIP CULTURE

  1. INTRODUCTION

In the United States of America, the month of January is dedicated to celebrating mentorship through the National Mentoring Month (NMM), an initiative that has proven impactful since its inception in 2002 (Mentor.org).The essence of NMM lies in recognizing the transformative power of mentoring relationships, particularly for youth.

As Africa continues to grow as a vibrant hub for entrepreneurship, the continent can gain significantly from adopting a similar celebration with a focus on entrepreneurship. There are a few African countries such as Ghana which celebrate mentoring at a National level. By celebrating Mentoring and fostering a culture of mentorship, African entrepreneurs can access vital networks, knowledge, and support systems that enhance their chances of success.

.We have an African proverb which states that "Wisdom is like a baobab tree; no one individual can embrace it." This proverb reflects the idea that wisdom and knowledge are vast and cannot be fully grasped alone. Through mentorship, individuals can access a broader spectrum of wisdom.

2. OVERVIEW OF THE NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH IN USA

Established in 2002 by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, this month-long celebration highlights the importance of mentors in the lives of young people and encourages more individuals to become mentors.

Throughout January, there are several events and these include:

  • International Mentoring Day
  • Dr. MLK Day of Service
  • Thank Your Mentor Day
