YOU HAVE A VERY PUBLIC ROLE AND THAT INVOLVES SOME CRITICISM OF YOUR APPROACH — AS ANYONE IN VISIBLE LEADERSHIP ROLES EXPERIENCES. HOW DO YOU MANAGE AND CONTINUE YOUR WORK IN THE FACE OF UNFAIR CRITICISM?
Visible leadership calls for courage and conviction. I’m fortunate to have grown up with many excellent models of courageous leadership who taught me that critics may seek to undermine your achievements, but not to let criticism discourage me.

Karolina Zmarlak, Creative Director of KZ_K Studio, on Pivoting to Slow Fashion
The Karolina Zmarlak collection was mainly sold through boutiques and department stores (Saks Fifth Ave and Neiman Marcus, in the premier designer category) and relaunched as KZ_K Studion in January 2016, focusing on slow fashion using a direct-to-client business model.
YOU’VE CHOSEN TO EMBRACE SLOW FASHION; HOW HAS THAT HELPED YOUR BUSINESS?
We don’t stray; we don’t shop around; we don’t counter source; we know and trust our factories and providers, and they know and trust us. As with the “slow food” movement in Piemonte, Ialy, the chef/owners of established restaurants cut off their far flung, inexpensive food purveyors in exchange for local only, one-on-one, relationship based exchanges between themselves and local farmers. Their customers became friends, and were commensurately introduced to their farmer friends, in a closed-loop, trust-based, creatively focused network –as all in this circle of friends know it’s in their best interest to shine among the group, and to provide quality products and delicious innovative plates– a productive, virtuous cycle.
