?Welcome to Edition 11 of "The Mentor's Compass - Guiding Africa's Entrepreneurs"!?
?In this Edition we discuss "Unlocking the potential of Africa's informal economy through Mentoring". ??
??The informal economy in Africa is vibrant and refers to economic activities that mainly occur outside formal regulations . It is made up of a wide range of unregistered businesses, self-employment, and casual labor, such as street vending, craftspeople, small-scale farming, artisanal mining, and more.??
Based on World Bank data, the informal economy in Africa is estimated at approximately $0.85 trillion, contributing about 31.4% to the continent's GDP of $2.7 trillion in 2023.
Despite this significant contribution to the continent's GDP, the potential for growth remains massive in most African countries.
Imagine what Mentoring could do to unlock the potential of Africa's informal economy!
Some entrepreneurs start off operating in the informal economy and eventually scale to create larger enterprises.
Unfortunately, most entrepreneurs are not so fortunate and remain stuck to operating informally for years due to challenges that can be overcome through mentoring.
Mentoring can go a long way in addressing the challenges faced by the entrepreneurs. Other stakeholders such as governments, local authorities, large companies and other organizations can also provide enabling support to facilitate increased mentoring. The implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area must also be another enabler for Mentoring in the informal sector throughout Africa.
Challenges faced by entrepreneurs in the informal economy
Entrepreneurs operating in the informal economy face many challenges, some of which are difficult to overcome on their own. Some of these challenges include :
?? Lack of Business Skills and Training
?? Limited Access to Finance
?? Lack of Formalization and Legal Protection
?? Poor Infrastructure
?? Limited Access to Markets and Information
These challenges create significant obstacles for entrepreneurs seeking to grow their businesses and contribute to economic development.
Mentoring as a solution
Due to the large numbers of entrepreneurs in the informal economy and in order to include as many as possible, Group mentoring would be the preferred approach. Group mentoring allows for a bigger number of entrepreneurs to mentored at the same time and also facilitates networking and cross-pollination of ideas between the entrepreneurs. However, in some situations it may be ideal for entrepreneurs to opt for One-to-One mentoring. Mentors can assist the entrepreneurs in various ways such as :
? Enabling training in different aspects of business
? Through their networks and influence, mentors can connect entrepreneurs with other professionals who can handle specific challenges such as formalizing the businesses and providing funding
? Advocacy to other stakeholders such as local authorities, government, corporates
? Sharing online resources
Allocating time for mentoring might be a challenge for some entrepreneurs. However, they must prioritize the opportunity that a mentor can provide in transforming their businesses.

1 天前Very insightful. The potential to be unlocked This is very insightful—there’s immense potential to be unlocked. From my perspective, many entrepreneurs in the informal sector are unaware that mentorship is a valuable source of knowledge. If group mentorship were made available, it could be a game-changer, especially if facilitated through NGOs and business incubators. Such initiatives would not only provide education but also create opportunities for entrepreneurs to grow and scale their businesses. As an entrepreneur myself, I can personally attest to the transformative power of mentorship. Whether you're a startup seeking growth or aiming for scalability, mentorship serves as the lighthouse guiding your entrepreneurial journey. Thanks for sharing, Ray!.
