eWATER has secured funding to install 2,000 eWATER Smart Taps in 150 Villages in Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi or Uganda.
This will provide clean water 24/7 for 400,000 people. eWATER stays for a minimum of ten years to keep the system working. Unlike other NGOs and donors we don’t pretend to hand over to the ‘community’ who then get blamed when things go wrong. Our local teams take responsibility.

Why eWATER??
Community models don’t work.
We installed a tap into Sangara in 2020 for a well-known charity, who insisted we hand over the tap to be managed by the community.?When a mains pipe burst not long after installation and they had already “handed it over to the community” so took no responsibility.
As you can see, this left the people of Sangara with no water for over 8 months:
The “community-ownership” model may sound good on paper to Western donors, but the reality is, it doesn’t work. There is no revenue for maintenance and repairs and no accountability, so when a problem arises- which it inevitably does- the water stops flowing.
eWATER works.?
In comparison to these alternative models, eWATER local teams take responsibility with the village, offering local engineers and technicians to ensure that the water keeps flowing.?
Jarreng was the first eWATER village in The Gambia. Installed in 2016, 3,500 customers in Jarreng have enjoyed clean water from our 28 Smart Taps in the village 98% of the time. Local engineers and technicians perform regular maintainance and deliver repairs within days if required. As a result, the villagers can continue to access our safe and clean water.
