Earlier this year, millions of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo suffered after severe flooding heavily impacted communities living on the riverbanks and flood plains. Infrastructure and houses were damaged and submerged, with entire bridges being lost to the waters. Without homes, families were forced to seek shelter in neighboring districts. Around the world, 60% of refugees and asylum seekers come from or live in climate hotspots. This further highlights the detrimental impacts of the climate crisis and how vulnerable communities bear the brunt of extreme weather events — forcing them to rebuild again and again. ? UNHCR/Joel. Meet Sharon, a 22-year-old refugee and mother from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who has overcome many challenges to continue her education. Sharon was recently selected to receive a DAFI scholarship to study International Relations at Kigali Independent University. Though she was excited about being selected for the scholarship, Sharon worried about how she would be able to take care of her two-year-old son, Smith, while she was at school. Thanks to assistance from a friend and fellow DAFI recipient, Sharon was able to secure childcare for her son, enabling her to attend classes. Now, Sharon is one step closer to achieving her dream of graduating from university and building a better future for her family.

In just a matter of days, the underpass of the West Seattle Bridge was transformed into a vibrant mural that celebrates Seattle's rich history of welcoming refugees. The mural, which was commissioned by USA for UNHCR, was created in collaboration with Artolution, an arts non-profit that trains teams of local teaching artists and facilitates educational arts programming, Urban ArtWorks, a local Seattle organization that engages youth, artists and communities in the creation of public art that inspires connections and honors their voices, and the City of Seattle. “This mural shines as a powerful symbol of how public spaces can celebrate what all members of our community bring to enriching our neighborhoods, including refugees," says Suzanne Ehlers, Executive Director and CEO of USA for UNHCR.
