EdgeBytes#5 covers very interesting topic for all. It is about relationship between open source and edge computing.
Does open source need edge computing or is it other way round or may be both?
Why are we even talking about open source in context of Edge computing perspective?
So here is the explanation.
Edge computing's key characteristics are- large scale deployments, variety of H/W and variety of workloads (containers/VMs). This makes it very costly affair and a complex one too. Moreover nobody wants to limit their agility and innovation by sticking to one or two vendor's view of edge computing. Considering this, enterprises are turning towards Open source solutions.
One of the prominent project in Edge computing space is LFEdge (linux foundation Edge) and under this there are several projects like- Akraino, EdgeXFoundry, Open Horizon, FLEDGE, EVE, Baetyl etc.
Apart from this, Linux Foundation is also working on various initiatives and projects like- CNF Testbed, Opendaylight, ONAP, Magma, Kubevirt, OPNFV etc. that cover 5G and Edge computing.
Out of so many projects, Akraino Stands out from Edge computing perspective. It provides variety of blueprints which are production ready. Aim of this project is not to create something from scratch rather it is about integrating various open source projects and making the overall architecture suitable for given use-case.

In coming days, open source will become an essential element for all Edge computing deployments hence it is extremely important to keep oneself updated in this area.
