Ed3 Weekly Issue #150: Pacific Power
Hello Ed3 frens,
These round number milestones are always cause for a special reflection. Whether it is making my 100th issue, my 1000th LinkedIn subscriber, or now my 150th issue, I am amazed at the growth that this newsletter has experienced.
It reminds me of two important things:
This 150th issue is extra special because it is being released the same month that I have partnered on planning my first blockchain and education event, the Hawaii Blockchain Youth Summit.
I shared a little about this in the last issue, but I want to just share it again because this event is the first of its kind in Hawaii.
This week’s deep dive also has a special Hawaii flavor as we dig into an announcement between Google and the University of Hawaii to offer free access to Google Career Certificates, Google AI Essentials, and access to the Gemini app to students across all 10 campuses.
Both of these announcements are significant because historically Hawaii has been left out of the advancing tech industry. Because of our isolation and lack of an advanced technology infrastructure, we have been passed by for many of the leading innovations of the past 40 years.
I see this announcement by Google and the emergence of a small yet thriving blockchain industry here as evidence that we are reversing the trend.
In addition to the deep dive, we also have some great resources on some other news in the blockchain and education sector:

?? Weekly Deep Dive
This article discusses how Google is bridging the digital divide in Hawaii and the Pacific region by expanding language support on Google Translate, including seven new Pacific Island languages, and investing in subsea cables through the Pacific Connect initiative to improve internet connectivity.
Also, Google is partnering with the University of Hawai?i System to provide students with access to Google Career Certificates, AI Essentials training, and the Gemini app, aiming to bolster AI and workforce development skills. I hope these initiatives can equip students in Hawaii with the tools and skills necessary to participate in the global digital economy and address in-demand job sectors. Read
