Ed3 Weekly: Houston We Have a (Money) Problem

As we dive into the exciting possibilities of innovations of AI, virtual reality, and other web3 tools it's important to pause and reflect on the critical issue of accessibility. I’ve been thinking about this a lot because I love using all these new tools, but what about those that can’t log onto the internet, buy an expensive headset, or have out-of-date devices?

These questions weigh on my mind as I explore and share these technologies in our newsletters.

For example, Google Bard, Microsoft Co-Pilot, and even ChatGPT are free services, but there are still far too many young people who don’t have simple access to the internet. How are they supposed to use these tools?

In our first article, we confront the potential conflicts that arise when implementing complex and costly technologies in educational settings, particularly virtual reality headsets. As early adopters gain access to these headsets, we must consider how they will be maintained, updated, and replaced.

Will schools be forced into partnerships with big tech companies to ensure ongoing access? These are challenging questions without easy answers, but they are essential to contemplate as we navigate the world of transformative technologies.

As you browse the resources for this week keep in mind the critical importance of accessibility and equitable access to these remarkable tools.

With metaversities completing their first year of implementation, this article sheds light on the cost considerations that need to be taken into account when launching these programs. There are financial challenges emerging, such as costs associated with acquiring and maintaining VR equipment, coupled with limited availability of resources. This makes me wonder how these financial constraints will impact the future integration of VR technology in education.

The article suggests that the support and involvement of tech giants like Apple could potentially speed up the implementation of VR technology. It also raises some concerns about the potential influence of these companies. It is crucial for universities to strike a balance between accepting financial assistance and maintaining institutional autonomy. It will be interesting to see how these schools navigate the quest for resources while ensuring their institutional integrity.

Hopefully, you have had the chance this summer to play around with chatGPT. This Substack article shares a demonstration to wow educator colleagues by compressing a week's worth of work into just 10-15 minutes. The demo creates a scheme of work, lesson plans, resources, student guides, exam questions, exemplar paragraphs, and assessments in a fraction of the time that we normally allocate to these tasks.

While demonstrations of this type are impressive and definitely wow teachers new to this technology, it's essential to acknowledge its limitations. This approach may fall short in incorporating up-to-date pedagogy and personalized student-teacher relationships, which are crucial aspects of effective teaching and learning. Regardless of the speed and efficiency of ChatGPT, it should not overshadow the importance of tailoring instruction to individual student needs and fostering meaningful student-teacher interactions.
