Online education has a real chance to scale up and it comes with many hurdles and challenges but it is still a massive opportunity for entrepreneurs who have tapped into this market. It is estimated that more than 1 Billion students are sitting at home because of CoronaVirus inspired school closures.
This staggering figure doesn’t directly translate to potential customers, at least not yet. There are various hoops that ed-tech needs to jump over to make the most of this situation.
TAL Education’s Zhang Bangxin was able to jump on the market demand and saw a wealth increase of $1.7 Billion.
If other online education companies can adapt and overcome the following obstacles, they too can make it big.
What are the Big Challenges?
Infrastructure: The lack of the appropriate devices and bandwidth for middle and rural economic sections of the society is a gap that needs to be addressed. How will such resources come into play? The government and private institutions that have already commenced digital classrooms need to address this problem. This change might not happen instantly but all that is required now is that first brick to set the base.
Digital Disconnect- Many schools and colleges have started online classrooms. Attempting to replicate the conventional school structure, from attendance to questioning students during lectures but with inventive video hacks and internet connectivity issues, this method is still in its testing phase.
What Needs to Change?
Better technology that works with limited internet capacity which also loops in the student’s guardian and provides transparent and seamless communication between all parties. Similar to something we once did with one of our European clients, Social Schools. Cyphertree provided the appropriate technical support to connect teachers, students, and parents, into 1 system through an interactive app.
New Ways of Learning- Modern teaching methods that disregard the physical classroom structure that is currently being implemented.
This is a grand opportunity for ed-tech companies and those that are able to resolve and refine their product will make it big!
