The Renaissance in Florence conjures images of beautiful frescoes and elegant buildings—the dazzling handiwork of the city’s skilled artists and architects. Equally important for the centuries to follow were geniuses of a different sort: Florence’s manuscript hunters, scribes, scholars, and booksellers.
At the heart of this activity was a remarkable man: Vespasiano da Bisticci. He became the "King of the World’s Booksellers.” Vespasiano reached the summit of his powers as Europe’s most prolific merchant of knowledge when a new invention appeared; Gutenberg's printing press.
?"THE BOOKSELLER OF FLORENCE"?chronicles bookmaking from handwritten manuscripts of scribes to moveable type of printers through one of the true, but forgotten, titans of the Renaissance - Vespasiano da Bisticci.
Ed gives gallery talks at the Society of the Four Arts Esther B. O'Keeffe Art Gallery. He serves as a docent at the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum and leads historical walking tours of the Breakers Hotel.
