Ed Lamont gives gallery talks on HARD BODIES: Contemporary Japanese Lacquer Sculptures. The sculptures can be viewed at the Society of the Four Art's Esther B. O'Keeffe Gallery Building in Palm Beach. The exhibition runs from December 3, 2022 - January 22, 2023. Ed's gallery talks are scheduled for 11:00 am on December 10, 21, 28, and 31. January 4, 7, 14, and 21 gallery talks are planned as well.
Organized by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the 33 works by 16 artists in HARD BODIES constitute the first-ever comprehensive collection of contemporary Japanese lacquer sculpture.
Lacquer is a tradition nearly as old as civilization itself. Since Neolithic times, artisans in East Asia have used the toxic sap of the lacquer tree to coat and bond together wood, bamboo, textiles, and ceramics. Lacquer forms a durable, waterproof surface that protects and beautifies.
Since the late 1980s, this tradition has been challenged. A small but enterprising circle of artists have pushed the medium in new and dynamic directions by creating large-scale sculptures that exploit lacquer’s natural qualities.
