Ed Lamont Addresses the Historical Society of Lake Worth on Gen. Worth

On January 21, 2021, Ed Lamont presented General William Jenkins Worth: Forgotten American Military Hero to the Historical Society of Lake Worth. The virtual presentation told the story of how William Jenkins Worth rose to national acclaim as an American military hero during the first half of the 19th century.

Born in Hudson, NY, Worth served during the War of 1812 and became Commandant of Cadets at the United States Military Academy. He fought Blackhawk, Winnebago, Cherokee, Creek, and Seminole Indians. He earned national recognition as the Hero of Monterrey at the outset of the Mexican-American War. Worth led American troops including U.S. Grant and Robert E. Lee into Mexico City at the war's conclusion in 1847.

World famous Worth Avenue in the Town of Palm Beach and the Lake Worth Region of Palm Beach County are named for General Worth as a result of his leadership during the 2nd Seminole Indian War. Fort Worth, TX; Worth, IL; and Worthville, KY; and counties in Georgia, Iowa, and Missouri are named for Worth as well.

General Worth is entombed at Worth Square in Manhattan (East 25th St. between 5th Ave. and Broadway) inside a 51' high obelisk.

Since 1991 Ed has served as a docent at WHITEHALL - the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in Palm Beach since 1991. He's led over 2,500 tours into America’s Gilded Age at WHITEHALL and was recognized as the museum’s 2001, 2006, and 2007 Interpretive Docent of the Year. Ed leads historical tours of the Breakers Hotel, gives art gallery talks at the Society of the Four Arts, and facilitates book discussions at the Gioconda & Joseph King Library in Palm Beach.
