ECOWAS has pledged its readiness to deploy its standby force to reverse the coup in Niger should diplomatic efforts fail.
According to reports, all ECOWAS member states, with the exception of those under military rule and Cape Verde, have pledged to contribute troops to the standby force meeting in Accra, Ghana’s capital, on Thursday.
The ECOWAS commissioner, Abdel-Fatau Musah, was quoted as saying, "Let no one be in doubt if everything else fails; the valiant forces of West Africa are ready to answer the call of duty."
"By all means available, constitutional order will be restored in the country," Musah told the assembled defense chiefs from member countries, listing past ECOWAS deployments in The Gambia and Liberia as examples of readiness.
Nigeria's chief of defense staff was quoted as saying, "Democracy is what we stand for, and it's what we encourage."
Do you think ECOWAS will resolve Niger's crisis with one hand calling for dialogue and the other hand holding a barrel? This creates mistrust between ECOWAS and the Niger junta thus impeding any constructive dialogue. On the other hand the regional body has imposed punitive sanctions against Niger and this is affecting the daily lives of ordinary people. When will ECOWAS learn that sanctions kills innocent civilians?
Zimbabwe is a case study that sanctions don't result in regime change and hurt civilians more than those in power.

The idea behind sanctions is built on Eurocentric definition of democracy, racism and deprivation of fundamental rights of civilians with hopes that they will rise against the ruling elites and result in regime change. Africa must redefine what true democracy means and develop its own version of democracy which is not out of touch with reality and reflects the aspirations of the African people.
I think there is a need for ECOWAS to rethink and restructure its conflict resolution architecture.
Democracy is not a bitter pill that is imposed upon people; the people in Niger will be the ultimate solution providers for this crisis.

1 年Kelvin Edeh You said They should have looked inward and provide good governance rather than gamping their interests with military threat in the name of democracy. I think that’s what DR UMAR and what The Muslim Leadership was going for in their direct talk and challenge to these Men to see the once in a lifetime opportunity for The United States of AFRICA. Serve the people and the nation and the call for the Coupe to Cease. Its embarrassing that these Respected Leaders Their Challenges and the Lead prayers of the Nation have gone ignored. I’m also intrigued you said Ai is the great Leveler. How can python inform these Men this moment. Or were you saying the opportunities to WIN with ai are being missed?

1 年They should stop making the bidding for others. Much I hate coups, these ones are indeed very welcome because they break with the status quo, hence why some countries who benefited from the organised kaos are likely going to lose their grip on the country. It is high time for Africa to delink and gain a real and meaningful independence. Rather than looking at the coup let’s focus our mind on the many that are dieing daily trying to reach Europe ad them devising inhumane and cruel policies to deter people by deliberately letting them die and yet pretend to be innocent.

1 年I am still convinced that the primary aim of all the threats is to scare the military in their states from emulating the trend. It's just for the selfish reasons of the presidents who feel threatened by the successful coup spreading across the region. They should have looked inward and provide good governance rather than gamping their interests with military threat in the name of democracy.
