The Economy as we know it is over...

The Economy as we know it is over...

This is a headline I have seen not just once or twice but six times in the past 24 hours. Interestingly, while the Gateway Regional Chamber of Commerce was having our Annual Economic Outlook Luncheon, Jerome Powell was speaking to members of the press about the US Economy.

Yes, Jerome Powell did in fact say that the Economy as we know it is over. He was trying to say that the Pandemic has caused a massive acceleration into telework and e-commerce that was already happening.

He was not, as the headline without context suggests, trying to say that the general US economy is over. He was just merely pointing out that the way we operate will be drastically changed for years to come because of what we have learned in the pandemic.

This has led to many tweets, Reddit posts, and LinkedIn articles discussing the demise of US economic institutions. While I am not here to argue the health of the US economy, I do want to point out to people that headlines are often used as clickbait. Often times the article that follows the headline does not even support the headline.

What I am trying to discuss here is that in this especially divisive climate, finding sources of trustworthy world news and information is more important than ever. Here are some of my favorite places to go for information.

Pew Research Center

Brookings Institute

CDC website

Cato Institute

All Sides News

Conversable Economist

USA Today

Snopes

The Poynter Institue

These are some of my favorite off the top of my head. If you have any other suggestions for trustworthy news reporting or analysis, I would love to hear from you!

Eric, thanks for posting this and I agree we all need to find diversity in our news source(s). A single source intake gives that source more power then they've earned. However, I did not read this headline, which I've seen a few times, as the end but more as an evolution of the economy as has occurred over hundreds of years. Check out this video, https://bit.ly/2UDmPfH Thanks and have a great weekend!!
