Economic Headwinds: The Greater Need For Investigative Due Diligence

As 2022 comes to a close there is universal belief we are headed into even more uncertain economic times and most likely a recession for next year (Footnote 1). Such times present unique and stark challenges to companies as they continually adjust forecasting with shifting market trends and economic indicators. But what is reality is that such economic times also present opportunities for companies that are well positioned to weather such conditions and double down on long term growth strategies and increased efficiencies.

Regardless of whether or not companies are battening down the hatches or stretching their legs for economic gain there is always a need to set conditions through intelligence led decision making and course adjustments. A part of this process is the willingness to have an independent and robust process of investigative due diligence on future mergers, acquisitions and leadership additions. Addressing such challenges internally and/or without sufficient depth leaves companies and their leadership at risk for reputational challenges which invariably affect marketability and customer retention. By doubling down on independent and comprehensive due diligence tailored to specific needs companies can not only say they did it but can move forward with enhanced confidence.

In the age of ESG there are added reputational and cultural implications of due diligence (Footnote 2). As a result of end to end scanning of a company's ESG 'state' to public declarations of cultural adherence, the necessity of due diligence to buttress confidence in such areas as procurement, environmental sustainability frameworks to outbound investments the need is clear. Economic uncertainty doesn't mean trimming costs for this critical step but reinforcing it. Uncertain economic times and recessions are necessary occurrences that allow for enhanced efficiencies when they are needed most.
