Empty Nesters Embrace Tech Fears in Journey Back to Education as Futuro Health Scholars

For many older adults, the prospect of returning to education can be daunting. Some may worry about their ability to keep up with younger peers, while others may feel overwhelmed by the fast-paced nature of technology and question their ability to navigate it successfully.

After many years raising her children, Yoshiko Q. chose to reenter the workforce by pursuing training through Futuro Health to become a Patient Care Representative. However, the thought of returning to education brought about a wave of anxiety as she grappled with feelings of self-doubt, believing she lacked the necessary computer skills. Upon completing the Futuro Health application survey Yoshiko realized that she underestimated her technology skillset and did not give herself a fair assessment in this area. Yoshiko reapplied to the program and was delighted when she was contacted by a Futuro Health Success Coach offering the encouragement she needed.??

Yoshiko is among the many adult Futuro Health Scholars who are empty nesters and jumping back into education and making career changes later in life. While the average age of Futuro Health Scholars is 31, some did not grow up digital natives.

One common misconception is that learning becomes more challenging as we age. However, research suggests that older adults possess unique advantages, such as life experience and a strong work ethic, that can enhance their learning capabilities. By recognizing their own strengths, older learners can overcome the self-doubt that often accompanies returning to education.

Latoya G ?. had always wanted a career as a nurse. Now a Grandmother, Laytoya suffered a tragedy when her son-in-law passed away.??Working in a non-clinical job at a local hospital, Latoya turned to Futuro Health in hopes that she could begin her new career pathway in healthcare starting as a medical assistant, while also helping her daughter financially with her grandchildren.??Latoya has since started her training in Futuro Health’s Medical Assistant program and is eager to continue her education towards her goal of becoming an RN.

Our Latest Blog: The Future of Aging and Automation

How will work manifest 15 years from now based on technological advancements like AI? And what is the impact on the future careers of those in occupations providing care for the young, the elderly, the sick, and the disabled, roles largely held by women. New reports project that between 2021 and 2031 the direct care workforce will add over 1 million new jobs, while almost 9.3 million total direct care jobs will need filling. Paurvi Bhatt, board member on the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers, provided insight when she appeared as a guest my WorkforceRx podcast, “We know that the majority of people who do provide care closer to home happen to be women of color, so we’ve got this larger dynamic that’s going on where we’re trying to ensure greater levels of equity of service, employment and of fair wage.” Other reports and articles have spotlighted the issue of women in healthcare, disparities in compensation and the long hours they put in to take care of and protect their communities. While the population is aging and the older population is becoming more diverse, individuals are living longer with complex chronic conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions.

The health field has always been a part of Lisa’s life. In school, Lisa succeeded in her medical coding classes, but didn’t pass the certification. She felt defeated and lost as she began losing money trying to get certified. When Lisa’s friend Angie A. brought Futuro Health to her attention, Lisa was relieved, excited, and incredibly grateful. Lisa has dreams of working in the nutrition department, which she is passionate about as someone living with diabetes. Watch Her Story

Episode #69: A Once In A Generation Chance To Advance Economic Mobility

According to recent reports from the University of Massachusetts and the US Department of Energy, the Biden administration’s historic investments in infrastructure and combatting climate change are already having an impact on the job market and will continue to do so with some economists forecasting the creation of millions of jobs over the next decade in those sectors. Harnessing these investments to boost economic mobility is a key focus of our WorkforceRx guest, Rachel Korberg, executive director and co-founder of the Families and Workers Fund, a coalition of philanthropies led by the Ford Foundation and Schmidt Futures. “We’re all working together with the idea that this is a really once in a generation opening to advance economic mobility for all,” she tells Futuro Health CEO Van Ton-Quinlivan. The goal is ambitious: to create upwardly mobile careers for one million people who are typically locked out of such opportunities by investing in models for training and retention, creating strategic partnerships and helping employers and government with the resources needed for “high road” training. The Fund has also created a formal role for frontline workers to make sure their perspective is on an equal footing with the Funder Advisory Board. “They've shaped millions of dollars in our grant making.
