Paving the pathway for Futuro Health Scholars into in-demand jobs
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 6% growth in surgical services job opportunities in the coming years, including sterile processing technicians and surgical technologists. Futuro Health, in collaboration with several of its accredited educational provider partners, recently hosted training sessions for its Surgical Technologist Program Scholars. The sessions provided scholars with the skill sets needed to effectively and confidently work in the perioperative environment. The curriculum focused on essential competencies such as performing a surgical scrub, gowning, gloving, and setting up a sterile field to prepare Futuro Health scholars for externship opportunities.
Traci West, Futuro Health Program Manager for Surgical Services Pathways, highlighted that these training sessions introduce fundamental operating room techniques. Futuro Health Scholars gain hands-on experience to effectively and confidently navigate the perioperative environment.
“These learned skill sets form the foundational knowledge that Futuro Health scholars then build upon during their externship experience leading to entry-level employment as a surgical technologist,” stated West.?
If you're an employer seeking a reliable, quality and diverse pool of candidates in your locality, consider exploring the option of providing externships and job opportunities to individuals enrolled as Futuro Health Scholars. For further information, contact [email protected].
Our Latest Blog: Nurturing a diverse and resilient healthcare workforce
Last October, I was a part of a global panel put on by Women in Global Health, related to their report on why women in healthcare positions are resigning at concerning rates. Given the high proportion of females who comprise the healthcare workforce, this should be alarming to all.
As all healthcare providers know, retaining the current workforce holds primacy. Losing a nurse trainee within their first year of employment is a tragedy of investment – time and money invested by all parties, from the individual to the institutions that trained them and the employers who provided the clinical rotations. In my upcoming WorkforceRx podcast, CEO David Jarrard of Jarrard, Inc., a strategic healthcare communications firm whose clientele includes 1000+ healthcare employers, highlights how employers are reviewing the big and small in the daily routine of employees to fix sources of dissatisfaction. Issues range from scheduling, the ready availability of consumables to perform a job task, to job training and career pathing. We are heartened to hear about employer’s retention efforts as we undertake Futuro Health’s work to bring untapped talents in communities into roles in healthcare. And, we expect our Scholars to persist and thrive in the industry. Read The Complete Blog Here

Episode #76: Collaborative Solutions to Support Aging Well
The growing crisis in homelessness across the US has understandably garnered a lot of news coverage and attention from policymakers, and today’s WorkforceRx guest wants to make sure one key facet of the problem is not overlooked as solutions are discussed. “There's a lot of over-representation of older people in the homelessness rates, and older Black Californians -- and this is a staggering statistic -- are five times more likely to become homeless than their white counterparts,” says Sarita Mohanty, MD, MPH, MBA , president and CEO of The SCAN Foundation , whose work is centered in the nexus of age, poverty and equity. As one of the largest foundations in the US focused on improving the quality of health and life for older adults, The SCAN Foundation supports a wide variety of initiatives to address the complex factors preventing many Americans from aging well. On this episode, Dr. Mohanty shares some positive notes with Futuro Health CEO Van Ton-Quinlivan about statewide efforts in California that include expanded Medicaid access, moves to professionalize the home care workforce and the formation of Master Plans of Aging (MPA) at the state and local level. “There are some important areas of need that these MPA stakeholders are identifying and then they're actually advocating at a policy level to get these addressed.” Stay tuned for many more examples of cross-sector collaborations that are accelerating solutions to this critically important problem affecting Americans of all ages.
