Ecommerce Trends to Watch in 2025: What's Coming Next?

Ecommerce continues to evolve at a rapid pace, and as we move into 2025, it's clear that businesses need to stay on top of emerging trends to remain competitive. From platform choices to automation and AI, there's a lot to look forward to. Let’s dive into some of the key ecommerce trends that will shape the industry this year.

1. Shopify Plus Gains Popularity in B2B

For many years, Shopify has been the go-to platform for B2C businesses. But in 2024, we also saw a noticeable shift in the B2B space. Shopify Plus is increasingly becoming the platform of choice for larger businesses that need robust ecommerce solutions.

With its user-friendly interface, scalability, and vast array of integrations, Shopify Plus is proving to be a strong competitor in the B2B sector. That being said, other platforms like Magento or BigCommerce still have their place, depending on the needs of a business. It’s all about finding the right fit for your business goals.

2. Hyv? Themes: A Continued Revolution for Magento Stores

Magento has been a powerhouse for ecommerce businesses for years, and the introduction of Hyv? Themes has given Magento shops a much-needed boost in terms of speed and performance. In 2025, we’re expecting the trend to continue with more businesses adopting Hyv?.

It’s a breakthrough for developers and merchants alike, allowing for faster load times, enhanced user experience, and a cleaner, more modern design. Hyv? is definitely making its mark, and if you’re still on Magento, it might be time to explore what Hyv? can offer.

3. AI: More Than Just a Buzzword

Artificial intelligence is no longer just a futuristic concept—it’s here, and it’s already transforming the way businesses operate. In ecommerce, AI is helping with everything from personalized product recommendations to chatbots that provide real-time customer support.

But the potential doesn’t stop there. In 2025, AI will continue to improve the customer experience, make data-driven decisions easier, and help businesses predict trends and optimize pricing. It’s becoming a must-have tool in the ecommerce toolbox.

4. Business Process Automation for B2B

B2B ecommerce is known for its complexity, but automation is making things a lot easier. As more businesses move online, automation is playing a huge role in streamlining processes like order management, inventory control, and even customer communications.

In 2025, we’ll see more B2B companies adopting automation tools to increase efficiency and reduce the chance for human error. This trend is not just for large corporations; even smaller businesses can benefit from automating manual tasks and freeing up resources for growth.

5. Shoppers Are Spending More Online in 2025

According to recent surveys, almost half of shoppers plan to spend more online in 2025. This shift towards online spending is a direct result of changes in consumer behavior, including increased comfort with online shopping and the convenience of having products delivered directly to your door.

For ecommerce businesses, this is an exciting opportunity to cater to a growing pool of customers. Those who focus on improving the online shopping experience—whether through personalization, faster shipping, or better customer service—will likely see big returns.

6. Social Commerce Continues to Grow

Social media platforms are becoming more than just places to connect with friends—they’re becoming shopping hubs. In 2025, we’ll see even more ecommerce brands leveraging social media to drive sales. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok are integrating shopping features that allow users to purchase products directly through the app.

Social commerce is opening up new channels for brands to reach their customers, and businesses that aren’t already exploring these platforms are missing out on an opportunity to connect with potential buyers.

7. Sustainability Takes Center Stage

As consumers become more environmentally conscious, sustainability is increasingly influencing their purchasing decisions. In 2025, ecommerce businesses that prioritize sustainability—whether through eco-friendly packaging, sustainable sourcing, or carbon-neutral shipping—will likely gain a competitive edge. Sustainability isn’t just a trend; it’s becoming a necessity for brands that want to stay relevant in an evolving market.

2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year for ecommerce. Whether you're exploring new platforms, embracing AI, or finding ways to connect with your customers through social commerce, there’s much opportunity for businesses to grow and thrive in the online world.

Thats the first time I have seen Magento in the commentary for being future facing, would be good to see if this enables Magento beyond being a legacy eComm platform.

Great summary of many of the trends I see underway as well, Paul. B2B - especially complex use cases - remains one of the last frontiers, I believe, and AI will offer truly transformational opportunities that many vendors, agencies, and brands will struggle to adapt to. I'm less sure about social commerce (though this may just be my biased perception) and also a bit skeptical about sustainability "taking center stage" (with growth and profit already there, three's a crowd methinks ??), but I sure hope you're right. Happy 2025!
