Eco-friendly innovations in retail

Retailers are increasingly incorporating eco-friendly materials, reducing waste, and optimising supply chains. From recyclable packaging to energy efficient store designs, the retail sector is having to get its green act together.

Collaborations with eco-conscious brands and the integration of renewable energy sources are contributing to a more sustainable retail landscape. This transformative approach not only aligns businesses with global environmental goals but also resonates with an eco-aware consumer base, fostering a positive cycle of responsible consumption.

In 2024, materials selection now has implications far beyond aesthetics and function and is central to shrinking the environmental impact of retail operations. A recent article in Retail Touchpoints emphasised that by using sustainable materials retailers can show a genuine commitment to conserving resources, reducing pollution, and advocating for ethical manufacturing.

These options can include recycled and upcycled materials to decrease reliance on virgin resources, giving discarded items new life and keeping them from landfills; bio-based materials from renewable sources like plants and algae providing a greener alternative to traditional petroleum-based materials, often with a lower carbon footprint; innovative, minimal packaging to decrease waste and emissions; and reducing or replacing single use plastic wherever possible.

Retailers going down the sustainability track should look to FSC,?GOTS,?GRS,?BCI?and?Cradle to Cradle?certifications for valuable sustainability assurances.

Fashion retail has come in for a particularly hard time in all this, because being sustainable and environmentally friendly has generally not been a priority for the industry. ‘Fashion sustainability’ – when clothing, shoes, and accessories are manufactured and marketed to minimise any environmental impacts – is a problem that extends past the textile industry, as industries including labour, transportation, recycling and “fast fashion” industries are negatively impacted.

However, brands have slowly shifted away from fast fashion and towards ‘slow fashion’, which focuses on producing quality, staple clothing pieces with concern for the environment, combining the excitement of fashion with awareness of producing ethically.

Retail is changing for the better, but there is still much transformation ahead.
