Eco-Friendly Gardening: The Benefits and Techniques of Using Seed Balls

One fine afternoon when I passed WEC room students of the club were very actively and enthusiastically involved in some activity. Though I was eager to know what they were upto, but was busy with routine schedule. After an hour or two I was greeted with a group of students and was surprised to be gifted with three seed balls. I was excited to receive the same. The student members of Women's Empowerment Cell of SNS College of Technology prepared seed ball and distributed to the faculties as the part of the club activity.

By involving students in the creation and distribution of seed balls, the WEC:

  • Empowers Students: Encourages students to take an active role in eco-friendly gardening.
  • Promotes Teamwork: Fosters a sense of community and teamwork among students and faculty.

Raises Awareness: Educates the community about the importance of reforestation and biodiversity.

Seed balls, also known as “seed bombs,” are a fun and eco-friendly way to distribute and grow seeds. Lets have some insights on making of seed balls.

  1. Ingredients: Clay: You’ll need clay to form the outer shell of the seed ball. Compost: Compost provides nutrients for germination and initial growth. Seeds: Choose native or suitable flower or tree seeds for your region.
  2. Mixing: Combine one part seeds with three parts compost. Add five parts dry clay to the compost-seed mix and blend thoroughly. Gradually add water until the mixture becomes dough-like (not too wet).
  3. Forming Seed Balls: Roll tightly packed little balls about the size of marbles. Set them aside to dry in a shady place for a few days.
  4. Planting: Seed balls can be planted indoors or outdoors. Ensure they receive 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Water seed balls regularly to keep them moist.
  5. Benefits: Seed balls protect seeds from wind, birds, and other critters. They’re easy to handle, especially for small seeds.

Seed balls are a creative way to beautify your garden and share the joy of flowers with others.
