Eco-friendly fabric for bags is becoming more and more popular in the high-end market.
Last year, Prada, Miu Miu, and other brands permanently stopped using fur for good. And now, Hermès just launches a vegan bag made from fast-growing mushrooms. Loewe uses the remaining materials from the previous series to make a woven bag, which is one of their most popular bags.
Why suddenly major bag brands have joined the market for environmentally friendly fabrics？
One of the reasons is that the continuation of COVID-19 has made people pay more attention to health and environmental protection. And customers’ interest in making ethical choices has increased, so brands are launching items that reflect those demands.
What kinds of eco-friendly fabrics are there?
In addition to the rPET mentioned in the previous article, we mainly list four of them here.
- Vegan leather is obtained from man-made and non-animal sources. The texture, fold, and flex of mushroom leather are near-perfect alternatives to cowhide leather. But it can be torn by hand.
- Cork is a natural and renewable material, which has flexibility and durability similar to leather.
- As sustainable natural and vegan fabric, organic cotton is grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers and processed with no chemicals.
- Econyl uses synthetic waste from ocean plastic, abandoned fishing nets, waste fabric and forms them into new nylon fabric.
