ECO AMONG TOP CHOICES IN ENGG MECCA IIT-B

In an unprecedented shift, economics has outpaced several traditional engineering streams at the Indian Institute of technology Bombay, often regarded as the mecca for engineering in India. This year, the economics programmer opened at a higher JEE rank than disciplines such as environmental and civil engineering, signaling a major trend change in student preferences at one of India’s most sought-after institutions.

Faculty at the economics department said that the four-year BS (economics) program is a rather popular choice among aspirants. Data shows it tied at the fourth spot in the preference list of students aspiring to join IITB.

This year, the economics program at IIT Bombay opened its admission counter at the 1,563 ranks for the general category; the BS economics program attracted many female students. At the same time, energy science and engineering opened at 2,244, environmental science and engineering at 3,424, and metallurgical engineering at 2,690.

“Our economics department opens much higher than many engineering colleges,” said IIT director Shireesh Kedare.

Deputy director Milind Atrey explained that the admission rank range for the economics program fell between 1,000- 2,000, which is “remarkable”.

“These students score just 2-4 marks lower in JEE (advanced) compared to all-India ranks of 500-600. It’s clear that high scores are recognizing the value of a curriculum that combines finance, analytical skills, and strong communication, opening up diverse career paths.”

He added, “Many of our 40 graduates each year pursue PhDs at prestigious universities or are recruited by leading banks, and consulting firms, “IIT Bombay chair professor Haripriya Gundimeda highlighted the growing popularity of economics across the nation. “Initially, there was some apprehension when BS (economics) was newly introduced, as many aspirants were unaware of the program at IITB. However, after the third and fourth batches, the experiences shared by senior students, impressive placement records, and the skills advantage they gain for consulting roles have made this not only a popular pick but also a sought-after elective among engineering students” she noted.

At the Powai campus, ‘principles of Economics’ is a core course for all engineering students, the department of economics offers a minor in economics for engineering branches and also offers electives for those interested. The BS (economics) students to gain a similar skill set from other departments. Hence, other than core engineering jobs, the rest of the jobs are wide open for both BS economics and engineering students.

“But given the nature of training and their suitability for consulting and fintech firms, the economics program can attract lucrative jobs,” she said.
