Echoes of Solidarity: Boardwalk Hall and the Labor Movement Legacy

From its inception, Boardwalk Hall has been intertwined with pivotal moments in our nation’s story. It has witnessed the roar of the crowd during the first indoor college football game, served as a vital training ground for the Army Air Force during World War II, and even graced the stage for the illustrious Miss American pageant. Designated a national Historic Landmark in 1987, its walls resonate with echoes of bygone eras, whispering tales of triumph and struggle.??

Fast forward to 2022, and Boardwalk Hall finds itself at the forefront of a new chapter in the labor movement. Following the merger of International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT)District Councils 21 and 711, this hallowed ground now serves as the epicenter of the finishing trades. Yet, its legacy of solidarity stretched back to its very construction, a testament to the power of unionized labor in shaping our built environment.

In 2021, the inauguration of the Atlantic City Labor Museum marked a pivotal moment for the labor movement in the region. Here, amidst exhibits showcasing the evolution of tools and attire, visitors gain invaluable insights in the sweat and toil that went into erecting Boardwalk Hall. More than a mere historical artifact, this museum serves as a rally cry for the enduring relevance of organized labor in bolstering communities and fostering economic growth.
