Echoes of the Ethereal: Reimagining Landscapes through the Lens of Shanshui and the Digital Age

Echoes of the Ethereal: Reimagining Landscapes through the Lens of Shanshui and the Digital Age

In my practice, the genesis of an image at the site of its capture is a complex endeavour that seeks to distil both the tangible landscape and the intangible essence of the moment. This approach is vividly demonstrated in my Nepal series, where each photograph is not merely a visual document but a multifaceted expression that captures the spirit and atmosphere of the place. The original images are imbued with a depth that goes beyond their immediate visual aspects, engaging with the layers of meaning and resonance that the environment imparts.

?

This nuanced method of capturing images aligns with the philosophical undertones of traditional Chinese shanshui painting, where the essence of the landscape is as significant as its physical form. The original images, thus, serve as a canvas where the sensory experiences and the spiritual impressions of the natural world are intricately woven together.

?

In the studio, the reimagined reflections that stem from these original captures are where my practice intersects with the digital montages of Yao Lu and Yang Yongliang, as well as the serene composites of Lang Jingshan. Yao Lu's and Yongliang's works, which artfully integrate the classical Chinese landscape aesthetic with modern environmental commentary, provide a contemporary counterpart to my reflections. These artists use the digital medium to dissect the profound Anthropocene disruptions, echoing the current ecological narrative that has become so pronounced in our time.

?

Likewise, my reflective panels are not intended as mere replicas of the original images but as reinterpretations that delve into the layers of meaning behind the initial captures. This is a conversation that extends beyond the confines of the original scene, seeking to explore and expand upon the dialogue between humanity and nature. It is here, in the studio, where the influence of Lang Jingshan's tranquil harmonies is re-envisioned through a contemporary lens, melding tranquillity with the urgency of environmental discourse.

?

The interplay between the on-site creation and the studio-based reflections represents an evolution in my body of work. Earlier, my series "Remembering What Never Happened" was a testament to the constructed reality within the studio environment, where each tableau was a carefully orchestrated narrative. Now, the juxtaposition of creating on location with reflective studio work suggests a maturity in my practice—a bridge between capturing a fleeting moment in its raw immediacy and engaging with it thereafter to uncover its deeper, often latent, narratives.

?

In drawing from these influences and my own historical practice, I aim to craft a visual language that not only acknowledges the aesthetic values of traditional art forms but also confronts and addresses the pressing environmental realities of the present day. Through this, my work aspires to be a catalyst for reflection and change, encouraging a harmonious coexistence with our natural surroundings.

?

My technique for expanding and re-imagining the landscapes captured in my original images is rooted in a combination of advanced digital tools, including Photoshop, content-aware fills, and generative AI. This methodical blend allows me to push the boundaries of the original image, creating a series of panels that progressively abstract the scene.

The process begins with the central image—the heart of the narrative. This image is the anchor from which all successive panels will evolve. Employing Photoshop, I meticulously edit this central piece, enhancing and modifying elements to convey a heightened sense of the environment's character. Content-aware fills are particularly useful in extending portions of the image seamlessly, maintaining the organic feel of the landscape while allowing for a natural expansion of the scene.

?

As I move to the generative AI, a nuanced interplay takes place. The AI algorithms are guided to interpret the adjacent panels, drawing from their visual information to generate new yet coherent elements that belong to the same visual family. This results in each panel becoming a derivative yet distinct entity that carries forward the narrative established by its neighbour. The generative AI acts as an artistic collaborator, introducing unpredictability and complexity that might not arise from manual manipulation alone.

?

The technique ensures that as the viewer's gaze moves from the central panel to the outer ones, there is a discernible progression from the recognisable to the abstract. Each panel uses the immediate one to its left or right as its reference point, depending on the direction of the sequence. This creates a dynamic flow, where each panel is both a response to the previous one and a prelude to the next, fostering a continuous yet evolving visual story.

?

This creates a visual echo throughout the panels, where each successive one becomes an increasingly abstracted version of the original. The immediate panel to the left or right serves as the reference, guiding the transformation and allowing the initial interpretation of the landscape to unfold into something new. The journey from the central panel to the outer edges is one where the interpretive, shanshui-inspired essence of the original scene is distilled into its more abstract elements, reflecting the fluid and evolving nature of memory and perception. Each panel, therefore, is a step further into abstraction, a visual metaphor for the layers of interpretation and meaning that one may peel back from the core image, mirroring the complex relationship between the perceived and the imagined, the concrete and the ephemeral.

LinkedIn often feels like a 'marketing market place' you know all the jokes about the language used here to make simple things, roles jobs etc. seem so important. I am I'm sure guilty of this too, but it's also the best place to share ideas, thoughts and experiments. Here are a few more I have been working on, I have not yet printed these, they are large 1.5m x 2.5+ and 2.1m x 4m+
