Echo Hill Station Dedication - Marion Lowe Park, May 4

On Tuesday, May 4, at 11:00 AM, the Marion-East Cedar Rapids Rotary Club will dedicate its “Echo Hill Station” Lowe Park Art Walk project. The public is welcome to join us with the park location most easily accessed by parking in the west lot at the Irish Drive entrance to Lowe Park, from there it’s a short walk along the north trail. David Nieuwsma, President of Collins Aerospace Avionics Business Unit and Marion Mayor Nick AbouAssaly will be our featured speakers.

This interactive art project commemorates the science and technology created and produced in the community through its history, science and the legacy that carries on to inspire students to consider STEM education and careers. The display is based on Echo Hill Station which was located in Marion near the park and which transmitted the first image through space to Richardson, TX by tracking the Echo metallic balloon satellite 60 years ago. The display also features two 8 foot whisper dishes, 100 feet apart, the diameter of the Echo satellite, as well as a 6 foot stainless steel sphere which resembles Echo.

We want to thank our many supporters who helped us accomplish this park addition commemorating our community’s science and technology heritage.  May the fourth be with you!

When the Echo Hills area began to develop, I thought a Kiosk marking the location would be good. What the Rotary Club has installed is beyond my dreams for this project, you’ll have made this a wonderful addition to Marion’s Park system.
