EBA for Leaders

An Emotional Bank Account is a metaphor for the trust built in a relationship, like a financial account. Positive actions, like kindness and honesty, are deposits that increase trust, while negative behaviors, like disrespect or betrayal, are withdrawals that decrease it. Stephen Covey explains this concept in his book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” highlighting the importance of maintaining a high balance to foster cooperation and trust. In work relationships, a high balance allows for effective leadership and ease in making requests.

Here are the six key deposits in an Emotional Bank Account:

  1. Understand the individual
  2. Attend to the little things
  3. Keep commitments
  4. Clarify expectations
  5. Show personal integrity
  6. Apologize sincerely when you make a withdrawal

Applying these deposits in the real world requires intentionality. One can see the strong bonds that can be created in teams by ensuring higher deposits are in place. This principle also works for building relationships outside of work.
