Eaton Opens New Data Centre Power Modules Factory in Oslo

伊顿 , a leader in intelligent power management, alongside data centre design company CTS Nordics , has announced the grand opening of a new NordicEPOD factory in Oslo, Norway.

The state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to producing standardized power modules, known as EPODs, which significantly reduce the construction time for data centres.

Revolutionary Power Module Technology

NordicEPOD factory

The new NordicEPOD factory, spanning 12,000 square meters, can manufacture up to 350 EPODs annually. These power modules integrate Eaton's cutting-edge technology, including the EnergyAware Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which enhances energy efficiency and supports renewable energy adoption.

This advanced UPS helps balance the power grid by allowing data centres to integrate higher levels of renewable energy sources, making the EPODs a unique offering in the market.

Eaton's EPODs stand out from traditional prefabricated power modules because they incorporate well-proven, SF6-free medium voltage switchgear. This environmentally friendly technology eliminates harmful gases, ensuring a more sustainable and energy-efficient solution for data centre operators.

EPODs: Meeting the Growing Demand for Data Centres

As the demand for data centre capacity continues to surge, particularly driven by the energy-intensive needs of artificial intelligence (AI) applications, Eaton’s EPODs offer a timely and scalable solution. With the increasing need for quick and efficient deployment of data centres, EPODs provide a standardized, rapidly deployable power solution.

By manufacturing these modules in a controlled factory environment, data centre operators can reduce on-site construction times, delivering significant cost savings and minimizing the need for skilled labor at construction sites.

The EPODs are designed to provide up to 2MW of electrical power and include critical components such as Eaton’s UPS systems, transformers, and medium-voltage ring main units (RMUs). These modules ensure the uninterrupted and efficient flow of power to critical IT infrastructure, while also supporting cooling and control systems.

CTS Nordics: Innovative Data Centre Design

CTS Nordics

CTS Nordics, the design and build company behind the NordicEPOD factory, specializes in creating innovative and cost-effective solutions for data centre operators. Their expertise in new building design and modular construction methods complements Eaton's power management technology.

By providing standardized, pre-engineered systems, CTS Nordics helps data centres achieve faster project completion while maintaining high-quality standards.

The EPODs are shipped fully digitally enabled, with commissioning complete, ready for seamless integration into the data centre site. This streamlining of processes ensures a fast and efficient rollout of data centre power infrastructure, addressing the critical need for speed in the industry.

Gisle Eckhoff, Vice President, Business Development, CTS Nordics, adds, “Our expertise in data centre design, together with Eaton’s proven power management technology, global reach and commitment, are encapsulated in the EPOD and it adds up to a winning formula for the data centre industry which needs to build capacity fast, despite the shortage of construction and engineering skills across Europe.”

Boosting the Nordic Region's Digital Hub

The opening of the NordicEPOD factory in Hanekleiva, Norway, is strategically significant as the Nordic region emerges as a key player in the global data centre industry. The region's abundant supply of renewable energy makes it an ideal location for data centre expansion, and the factory’s 300-strong workforce is expected to grow as demand rises.

Ciarán Forde , Vice President, Strategic Accounts and Alliances, Eaton, EMEA, says, “Eaton’s advanced EnergyAware UPS, based on silicon-carbide inverters, together with the most proven SF6-free medium voltage switchgear in the industry, are amongst the features that make this EPOD technology offer to data centre operators truly unique. The EPODs contain other well-proven Eaton technology, too, including transformers and medium-voltage ring main units (RMU).”

Future Outlook

The opening of Eaton’s NordicEPOD factory marks a significant milestone in the evolution of data centre infrastructure.

By combining Eaton’s advanced power management technology with CTS Nordic’s expertise in design and build, the EPODs represent a faster, more sustainable, and highly efficient solution for meeting the growing demands of the data centre industry.

As data centres continue to play an essential role in the digital economy, this collaboration promises to accelerate deployment and support the industry's ongoing transformation.
